replacing fuel pump, do I need to drop the tank?
I was told that I don't have to drop the tank, but it would be really tight. I'm not really looking forward to doing it, so I'd like the easiest way possible. it's an 89 civic DX hatch. thanks
from what I've heard, yes the tank needs to come down. If you end up not having to drop the tank be sure to post up how you did it. I'm sure us EF guys want to know

Apparently from what my buddy told me when he did his, there was no way around dropping the tank, or he wasnt able to find one. But like these guys are saying, definately post a how to if you find a way

did it last weekend. undo the three fuel lines on the drivers side. put a jack under the tank. i also suggest using a blanket under the whole gas tank. lower tank with jack and then undo the filler neck and one other hose right there under the rear seat. also undo the fuel level float under the rear seat. i did it without draining about 5 gallons. i got it down by myself but needed help putting it back in. it's not that bad. you just gotta do it. good luck.
I'm glad I work at a dealership. When my fuel pump finally takes a crap on me I can put my car on a lift and drain the gas with the gas pump and remove and lower the tank on the "arm".
dropping the tank is very easy you just have to tilt it, not drop it can be done in about an hour easy.
This guy hit it on the head, except for the hour part took me a little bit longer in a garage with a craftman tool kit.

I did it last week. The problem I had was with my fuel sender line junction on the driver side where the flex line joins the hard line. It was sooo rusty. I didn't want to take any chances with it so I ended up dropping the tank to a point where i could just take off the top banjo bolt off the fuel pump cover...
While you have the tank out, check the 2-way vavlve located on the driver side of the tank to make sure it's oke dokee.
And finally, cut the return fuel line down to about 8" long. Past 8" from the cover, the line rusts pretty bad. I extended it with 1/4" fuel injected line to the hard line.

Oh, make sure when you take the tank off, work in an open space. I had my 2 garage doors open and still felt high the next day!!!

yes it has to be dropped as said above, but while your there do your self a favor and replace the rubber lines all comming off the tank with new lines and clamps you will be happy u did while u where there instead of redropping the tank at a later date in time to do that just very thing
u do have to drop the tank on a 89 dx hb, i did about a year ago and it was a bitch doing it myself. you need someone else to help you put the tank back up. i did it myself, but what a bitch using jacks. took maybe a couple of hours
