I have this stupid little competition with myself...constantly top my best MPG.
I live just off the freeway and it's about 25 miles to, well, anywhere. So I do mostly highway driving.
I have a high compression B18b with Y1 lsd tranny, the standard bolt ons and lightweight 11lb Miata wheels in an 89 si.
By inflating my tires to 36 psi, driving real gentle(WOT is the enemy) and doing some light drafting I have gotten a personal best of 46 mpg. I can regularly produce low 40s though.
I'm about to go with the Exospeed mid range cams so MPG will take a slight hit.
With as much as gas prices are going up, it's a beneficial hobby

Man thats slick, until the guy infront of you slams on his brakes to miss a deer. then you're MPG goes to 0 cuz your cars folded like oragami paper.
Be careful...

I haven't played with pressures on this car yet, but normally on FWD and RWD cars I like more in front. I have gone as high as 38psi in the fronts and 34 in the rears, you should read the max safe pressure on your tires though (often 44psi), fill it on a day where the weather is somewhat normal because heat will increase psi and cold will drop it a bit. Obviously the heat is the worst because you can blow out a tire this way.
Skinny tires, lightweight wheels will help reduce rolling resistance also.
Like said above keep the speeds relatively low, cruise, speeding up and slowing down (like in California driving) will hurt the MPG a little. Look for whicever engine has the least HP and likely that will put out the best MPG. The HF 1.3L supposedly dumped out up to 67MPG on the freeway.
I commute 37 miles each way so I feel your motivation there, gas in CA is never under $2 these days, $2.13 for 87 is good.

I'd say a B16A with a Y1 or an "LS" long-geared transmission would give you the best fuel mileage.
I can reach over 30mpg in my 2000 Civic Si, and that's a 2600lb car with a short-geared transmission. It's really all in your driving style . . .
However, if fuel economy is your prime concern, I don't see why you would bother swapping to a B-series at all.

The D15b6 (HF engine) will definitely get the best mpg. I got 50mpg on the highway one time (flat ground, no a/c, 60 mph, synthetic oil) with it. The DX (D15b2) engine isn't bad either, giving about 35 mpg in mixed city / highway. B - series engines aren't too bad, most people report getting 25 - 30 mpg. You might consider the DOHC ZC, mine gets about 32 mpg in mixed city and highway driving with the Si transaxle and PG7 ECU.

Uh, thanks...I hadn't thought of that.

thanks for the info mpg fuel economy is a concern of mine cause its my daily driver and i have a long drive to work, the reason for the swap is because my motors going bad and it would be nice to have the extra power when needed....
i would think the d15z1 would get the best mpg i mean it is made for fuel efficiency and has 92 hp(max but hey there are less hp hondas) it's sohc v-tec E. i haven't done any research on it but i remember someone on h-t reported in the 50's, i don't know if i believe it but it's been said...
