hey guys, im torn between piecing together my own turbo kit or buying the greddy. i've searched on HT and found alot of greddy kits making power in the 180whp range. not bad but my aim was 200 whp on a stock block.
i have a d15b7 with 146,XXX on the clock, compression test read 181 across the board. head will be swapped out for a Z6. IF i do piece together my own turbo kit it will consist of:
Z6 head
ported HF manifold
ARP headstuds
4 layer headgasket
T3/T25/16G turbo (haven't decided yet =/)
johnny racecar front mount
1G DSM bov
440's/walbro pump/FPR/uberdata
2.5 in piping all around
now for a first time booster would you guys recommend i buy the Greddy kit off the shelf, get a feel for it, and upgrade as i go along, or would you suggest piecing it together slowly?
basically if the Greddy users had to do it all over would you have bought the kit or pieced your own to your specs?

I suggest the greddy kit. My friend made 166whp at 5-6 psi on his z6 hatch. We just went to the track and he was on his 13in all season 175's, and managed to pull a 14.02. This was done on 5psi with no extra special tricks. Just a 2.5 in exhaust. Next week we will be uppin the boost to 7 psi and see what the thing can do. Having a high 13 low 14 car is extremely quick. Get the greddy for a first time booster. You will definetley be pleased. I got a spark racing kit, and it have ended up doin a lot of homemade fabrications and its not worth it for a first time booster. Get the greddy kit and bolt that **** up!

i'd like to hear from those that suggested to piece my own
Here's the kit I am putting together for my d16z6.
So far I only have the turbo, fmic, VAFC, and hf mani....

It's a lot cheaper than the greddy kit and it will have a bov, fmic, and a better fuel set up than greddy...

Look right below "Turbo Manifold". Charge Piping = IC piping

I have right around 1300 in my setup, and thats with a CCA 31x6x2.75 IC, ... a nice manifold (which i havnt installed yet.. still using HF mani) and a .48 / .60 T3/T4 (which really is too big for my car.. but oh well). I thought about a Greddy kit too, but 1200 for a non-intercooled, dinky snailed kit with no real fuel managment offended me. My 1300 includes DSM 450cc injectors and I run Uberdata for managment..
so anyway: piecing your own gets a
Just because its DIY/Junkyard/Homemade doesnt mean it has to look like **** either:

I would reccomend getting a new greddy kit without intercooler then buying a used intercooler, bov, and some U bends to make the rest of the piping. Very easy install in only a day.
no worries about certian down pipes fitting or any of that crap or piecing together oil feed, and return lines. And no worries about a used turbo being in bad condition. ANd no custom fabrication of down pipes and the like. No crazy timing advance detenation from afc hack.
I made 188whp and 167 wtq with the greddy kit running a large blitz intercooler (27 x 9 x 2) @ 8psi using the blue box on a 93 d16z6 with 135,000 miles on it. With a little bit of tuning i could easily have gotten to 200.
The greddy kit fits like a glove and will save you headaches in the end especially if your a newb.
I would definitly do the greddy kit over again i ordered and within a week it was at my door and a day later i was boosting all over ATL. If your a newb and the car is your only transportation go greddy.

this car is my only means of transportation =/
i'm still debating whether i should get the greddy. i saw on homemade turbo that they had z6's with high 13's low 14's with a T25. that's pretty ******* nasty. also i've heard alot of complaints about the blue box used for tuning and what not, plus the greddy doesn't come with injectors =/ =/ =/
i think this is harder then me having to decide if i should have kids or not

I am all for the greddy kit. I finally hit 12's with mine and i still have more in it. Next up is 12.5's. Just need better slicks and a little more boost. Go for the greddy kit. By the way this is on a bone stock z6 motor using hondata for engine manegment.
blue box runs safe and rich good for your only transportation. plus you won't need any bigger of injectors cause you won't be able to run that much boost on stock block. I would take bluebox over hack anyday. hack has incredibly advanced timing under low boost conditions and that can lead to engine going boom. and uberdata or the like would be tricky for a newb. Blue box can easily handle 7-8 psi which is the most you would want run on a daily driver with an older engine.
Basically Greddy will get you started quick, easy, and safe and is upgradeable when you become more advanced.
custom is less exspensive, more headaches, not quick, and you will be jumping straight into the more complicated stuff right away.

The new greddy kits come with emanage, not the blue box. The emanage is way better, plus you dont need injectors with that psi.
I put about $1100 into my turbo kit and the only used parts were the injectors and bov. My ACT xtss clutch and 3 inch exhaust were $800 together. At 10 psi I made 216whp/181tq. I vote for custom kit and I would get a decent sized turbo also (at least T3 60 trim .60/.48).
Quality, reliability, fit n' finish = GReddy.
Picked up my kit with FMIC for $1200. Add in a set of DSM's for $50 and a resistor pack and you're looking at a sub $1400 investment, especially with the advent of Uberdata and other freeware tuning software.

my car is a daily driver on the greddy kit. used intercooler and custom piping. made 185 WHP/170tq @ 7psi
all on the blue box
