Default total noob when it comes to sound systems

all right i got some questions of sound systems, first why do sub boxes have to be closed? does it sound terrible if it is not, i am thinking of doing the spare wheel box setup and there will be a 4 inch gap, will that make it sound horrible? also if i get a screen and a in dash dvd player do i need anything else? like this so called "brain"? also does anyone know of any sound deadening foam?
thanks guys

sub boxes do not HAVE to be enclosed. enclosed boxes are called "sealed boxes" they give off a more precise bass note. ported boxes which has a calculated opening in them gives off a more boomy bass note. the 4" gap if not calculated into the equation could make the sub sound like crap. but then again without seeing the set up and what not, my guess is as good as yours.

depending on the model of the monitor, you may or may not need a brain. if the model requires one, then it will come with it. If it does not, then you are probably buying a stolen monitor unit which will not work.

sound deadening foam suck. buy Dynomat instead. Its generally cheaper to do your trunk with dynomat than foam. plus its less messy.

hope this helps.

dynamat is ridiculously overpriced, i would NOT reccomend buying it.

go for some Peel 'N Seel, maybe Second Skin, Brown Bread..

you could look into liquid sound dampening as well, which has been noted as being more effective then mats ..

QuietCar (www.quietcool.com, i think) makes a product, as does Elemental Designs..
