code 17:VSS...89 hf w\D16A6
ok so i've searched and i still have a few questions. some say that the Vehicle speed sensor is in the tranny, and some say its behind the gauge cluster...which one is it? i've noticed that only when its hot outside(like today), i get a CEL and code 17 and my speedo stops working. but then after awhile...my speedo starts to work again. i'm not sure if its the VSS, cluster, or maybe the speed cable?
The actual sensor itself is mechanical and is located in the tranny...You will see a cable coming out of that tranny on the back side of it just about the axles. Press down firmly on it to be sure that is all the way in. There is an electronic amplifier that is located on the back of the gauge cluster that sends the signal to the ECU. I'm not too familiar with these, but I'd imagine that you could try another one and see if that fixes the problem.
