Default Why a cam REGRIND?

What does a camshaft regrind do to benefit performance?

I want to get one, but from what I know, larger lobes on a camshaft will give you better performance. How is grinding them down helping?

Oh and a 2nd question: has anyone knife edged their crankshaft?

Thanks

Not to sound like an *** or anything, but why would you want to get one if you don't even know what it is or what the benefits of it will be? Also I'm sorry I don't know either, I tried googling your question but I wasn't able to find any real solid info on it.

umm...yea.

I do know what the benefits would be.

I talked to several people and have gotten two different opinions

1. Regrind will hurt performance because valves will not open as wide, you want a totally new camshaft design with personal specs

or

2. You want a reground camshaft because all the regrind is is a reshaping, not necessarily a shrinking of the lobes.

I was wondering if the regrind is as important as I'm led to believe it is.

I've also read by searching that some companies add material and then grind them down to their specs...

If someone has had this and can guide me, it would be much appreciated

PICKLES- http://auto.howstuffworks.com/camshaft.htm would give you the basics

if you get your stock cams regrinded is basically, how do i say....well just reshaping the cam(s) to a different shape...as one of the last replys stated...say how your cam(s) lobes are more round there reshaping it to have a higher peak on the lobe...basically your regrinding your cam to the specs of another cam...say like your making it the same exact specs as a JG cam or TODA cam...basically you have the same came as what ever you regrinded it too but don't have the name...

Also, regrinding I think will depend on your car. For instance, the F22a1 is suppose to be a good increase in power, but on others, a waste of money. You also need to know what you are going to grind it too. You don't want to just go regrinding. Like the other guy said, you are actually reshaping it, and then need to readjust the valves so that they aren't slapping. For instance, you just took off part of the LOWEST part of the cam to get a higher lift on the high end of the cam. That means you will have play now inbetween the lifter and the cam. Do alot of research on this first. Good luck
