high rev pinging
its no more than a 96 ls(b18b),stock motor, only a k&n filter on the end of the stock intake tube, and catback exhaust...
lately when i get on it i hear a slight ping from the vavetrain,at about 4000,5000 rpm.sometimes worse than others sometime intermitent...theres no valve tap although i may need a valve adjustment...what else may cause this ping...timing is 16 degrees,i run 89 octane, and i notice this happening more when its hot outside...right now im running ngk coppers,(stock application)..i forget there number...any ideas ?

hot temparature with 89 octane fuel and 16 degree advance will ping on heavy loads. Its ntohing abnormal.
if you dont want pinging then use 91 or 93 octane.

thanks greg...i didnt think my stock ls would benefit from higher octane. gas unless need for other reasons.
what if it still does the same with 91..theres no 93 round here other than sunoco ultra 94...would going to a colder plug help? can not getting enough air into the motor cause this also..i.e. having a catback exhaust and stock intake...just trying to clear up ideas that have been run by me...

i think you both need to chill out. just get a fuel pressure regulator and up your fuel pressure a couple of psi. might be a little rich down low but you be fine up top. it's about 85 franks for b and m with the gauge and takes about 5 minutes to install.

try upping the plugs, bkr6e13 ngks. back the timing a bit if still pinging, set it to 15 and increment by 1 til it pings then back it down.
hess has 93, exxon has 93 ... i'd experiment with 93 first before doing everything if it stops pinging then you def had crappy fuel and need to stay away from the 89.

exxon up here in north jersey only goes up to 91,hess never bothered looking at,but i"ll give the gas a shot first, then new plugs, correct timing if need be,and lastly but not least, get a fpr and guage...thanks guys
is just a lil hard to understand why a stock ls would need 91 or even 93,shouldnt it have been fine with 89 which is 2 higher than the factory recomended 87...
