Default check engine code signal= 10......

I know it's the IAT, but why am i still getting a 10 code if I have used my friend's old sensor as well. Is the only way to get rid of my check engine light , is to buy a brand new sensor? Could it be something else, like my EVAP purge solenoid? And do I NEED the "scan tool" that the factory book is telling me to use, to ensure that my IAT is working properly?......is the IAT sensor expensive?
Thanks Everyone!!!

i get code ten at least once every 2 weeks, I reset the ECU (after assuring it's code ten) and go about my day, my friend had his sensor melted and that was causing his, I haven't checked mine outyet, so if there is something else I'd like to know as well.

can you explain this a bit, I run with no A/C ( I removed it) so one of the vacum hoses could be causing this?
