R134A retrofit - NEED INFO
I just retrofit my 91 civic's a/c from Freon 12 to HFC134A. Replaced the compressor, drier/receiver and flushed the system. Added R134A refrigerant. The pressure gauge stays on the line between low and full. Under the advice of a friend I added a total of approx 3 cans of R134A. Now Pep Boys (I have heard that they are full of $hit, but here is what they told me: "Pressure really means nothing. What does matter is how much refrigerant you are adding. The only way to tell is to evacuate the system and start from scratch. Doing a home job, I would not add more than a can and a half or you could very well blow the system." The service department at the Honda dealer said that the a/c system in that car holds 2 pounds of refrigerant only. What is two pounds a measure of? Anyway, my a/c is crazy ice cold and so far after 24 hours am having no problems whatsoever (except for the extra strain on the 70hp engine. I just need to know who is right and if I need to get the refrigerant evacuated and re-charged. Please help! Thanks.
I terms of contents, the small can has 14oz and the large can holds 19oz. I added one entire large can, one entire small can, approx half of a small and half of a large, so about 48oz total. That diagram says about 34oz. So then it is overcharged. What can I do at home to fix it? Press the valve to release some of the refrigerant? What if I leave it as it is. What are the risks and how likely? I definitely do not want to damage the a/c system. Texas summers are the worst. I had to go all last summer without one. Thanks.
Went out to discharge some freon and as soon as I put the tip on to open the valve and discharge, I heard hissing and now the refrigerant/oil is on the ground. Did I blow something or did it just leak from the high side or what?? Do I need to get more 134A and recharge the correct amount or will it hold??
