common motor oil leaks?
i'm currently going through alot of oil; a half quart every 500 miles. this isn't common, even for my oil burner. i'm sure oil is leaking somewhere, but i haven't located it yet. every time i drive for 10+minutes, i can smell burnt oil when i stop - oil on the header.
so, there aren't blue clouds coming out of the tailpipe, there are no oil drops in the garage where i park, the throttle body is sparkling clean, no oil on the spark plugs, there aren't leaks around the valve cover, and the motor compression is great.
my next step is go under the car and clean it with simple green, then look for oil seepage.
where do the c5's most often leak oil? the car has 60k miles and lots of hpde

if you are running without coolant....that in itself is an oxymoron

Well, my GSR (same block) has all kinds of leaks nowadays...
Common ones are as follows...
-cam plug
-cam ring seals
-vtec solenoid
-oil pan gasket
-rear main seal??? ...could be a possible one on mine, not sure yet though.
Check those out, report back.

haha, good one, bluer. the coolant is perfectly fine.

Distributor o-ring - I never thought mine would even leak, but I think it's started.
Less common occurences are the crankcase vapor separator box o-ring and VTEC solenoid gasket/filter.

Check your oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and the stupid little PCV box. The boxes crack sometimes.
Also, if you have a remote filter mount, I can almost guarantee that leaks unless you're using the Canton version.

i'm guessing if the oil was leaking from the cam seals (distributor side) i would see oil all around the valve cover and side of motor - none there.
the cam seals on the timing belt side are covered. i did just do a valve adjustment, but i used a new gasket and plenty of hondabond. i don't think this is the leak because the oil must be getting on the header/exhaust to produce the burnt oil smell.
is it difficult to replace the rear main seal? it sounds pricey
i was thinking of putting on a mugen oilpan, this seems like a good time if i want to change the gasket anyway.

My stuation was the same. A quart in 20 min of full throttle high rpm use.
Compression was fine, leakdown was perfect.
OIL RINGS were bad. They werent keeping the cylinder walls clean, oil was blowing out.
My IM was clean and so was the rest of the system (well.. black spots on the bumper) reason it was all clean, is because it was only blowing by at high rpm, when it was hotter and burning off quicker.
Hope this helps, to bad you wont know until you pull it open.

That's what I was thinking. Also check oil pan, though you'd probably have a puddle of oil if that were the case.

</TD></TR></TABLE>my back bumper is nasty as fawk right now and that is from ~1200miles of interstate driving.
a little over 1 qt. of oil was burned during that ~1200 miles.
Did you tear down and rebuild with new rings?
Different pistons?
What to do to prevent this/your type of failure next time?
Thanks

could be, but i have no oil on my bumper, plugs, or the inside of my header flange.

You're probably burning it. Next oil change, look at how clean the oil right after refilling, then wait a few hundred miles (full tank of gas) and then check the color of it again. Cars with failing rings cause the oil to get dark and dirty look very quickly.

I know this usually isn't common thing... but if there is oil on the header, one place that could possibly drip oil onto the header is from the oil filter... it is conveniently right above the header's 2-1 joint going into the cat. (Always seems to ruin my spotless oil change pan placement
)
This wouldn't have started happening after your last oil change, would it? or is it something that has been building up over time?
If you don't get puddles overnight, maybe it is sealed enough that only comes out during circulation? /shrug

That seems to be another common one.
