So my radiator has a small hole in it. It is only about 1mm in diameter. Maybe a little larger than a pin hole. I was wondering if rather than replacing the whole damn thing, if I can just dab a little JB weld over the hole? What do you guys think?

I don't know the worst that could happen! Thats why I was asking. It's the cheapest option so far...minus the radiator stop leak stuff.

 

Yeah you can try it. I have seen it done before. I think it lasted a long time on the car it was done to. Never used the stop leak stuff so I dont know if it works or not.

 

I know that the stop leak stuff works...it actually works really well from what I hear, but it is supposed to be shitty for the motor.

"Hell no." ----> I know you can be more insightful than this. Did I miss a thread or something? I have been searching radiators for a while now. I was gonna buy one, but then I thought of the JB weld thing.

 

JB weld will work well, but it also depends where is the hole. if its at an opening its be easy to do it but if its a corner next any angle leaks can still occured.

 

I've used JB Weld on an old radiator before. It *sorta* worked. Mine had a crack around the lower pipe (all metal radiator). It stopped the leak enough for me to drive to-from work w/o having to refill the rad every 10 miles. It didn't fix the radiator completely and I just ended up changine out for a new one anyway.

So, I'd say it's a temporary fix. You may also want to go to a boating shop and look for some "underwater" hull repair stuff. It comes in a clear tube and is two-part. You kneed the two together and mold it into place. It hardens up even in water.

EDIT: the underwater epoxy is called "Aquastick". I've used it to plug a hole in the bottom of a jet ski that was 1" x 0.5" so it should fix a small pinhole.

Do NOT use that radiator stop leak crap. It has a tendency to clog up heater cores and the narrow radiator passes. Try your luck with the JB weld stuff. Or just spend the few bucks and get a new radiator. That hole is just going to cause bigger headaches down the road. Maybe literally. Having a radiator blow up on you on a road trip = not good.

I second that . . . the stuff can cause more problems inside your engine. Fix the radiator on the outside or just replace it. It's not worth the money you'll save . . .

 

jb weld worked on the radiatior on my crx. Its kinda ghetto but it works

 

First of all, is your radiator an O.e with plastic end tanks? How do you think JB Weld will hold on plastic if it is?

Secondly where is the hole on the radiator? On a tank? On the core?

Just curious...

I'd never put JB Weld on my radiator.

just go to a junkyard and see what you can find...mine had a good size hole in it and i tried all of the above advice but i finally just went to a junkyard and bought a used one for like $25

 

Thanks guys...none of the local guys had it but they ordered me a new one for $80. I just got it today.
