Default LS vtec Block concern

i'm planning to do LS vtec instead of FI...after many many debates, i realize all-motor is probably better for my everyday commute to school/work/home.

Here is my question. Anyone know what compression will an ITR head yield?
Is it necessary to upgrade the block internals?
I know most of you here on the board all suggest getting better pistons/ rods, resleeve, rod bolt...etc etc.

BUT my question is, ive talked to this close buddy of mine and he said its okay to leave the LS short block ****STOCK**** This guy knows everything about ls/vtec too...he has one in his integra (CRV/vtec stock bottom end) He backs his statement up from his personal experience with his car and also from a very well known local guy here in MD by the name of "Fred Ellis" I too believe he has a CRV/vtec. I think He raced LIP aka Jeff here at the track.

SO now i'm confuse....i don't need to go all out full race motor like Fred, i just want something reliable in the long run. anyone? thanks

Some people get away with revving the stock LS block to 8000..some dont.
If you concern is relibility...then I would upgrade the bottom end.

An ITR head on a stock LS block will probably yield around 9.6:1 compression...pretty low.
Id get some Eagle rods and use some OEM high compression pistons.
Youll get better performance and reliability in one

Thanks HX_GUY...good job on your timeslip
When you say upgrade the bottom end. Will just upgrading pistons and rods end the fear? my objective it to not roll in the 11.5 and higher comnpression range. WILL ITR or CTR piston be adequate with Eagle Rods? I like to be somewhere in the 11.0 to 11.3 range, thanks a lot bro

Id throw a crank girdle on there also. You can either modify a GSR/ITR girdle or order one from Z10Engineering.

Alot of people will argue that a crank girdle is not needed..but Honda used a girdle on the stock B18C1/C5 engines..and I msure they didnt spend the extra cost just to look "pretty".

you have so many options when it comes to building your bottom end for ls/vtec. if you want 11.0:1-11.3:1, use the usdm itr pistons and dont mill your head. also, if you are going to rebuild your block, might as well do it right the first time. get oversized pistons. i ran on my stock ls block with a vtec head. it wasnt that great , i did have the gsr tranny too. but after building the bottom end, it made a world of difference. get everything balanced, get your block bored and honed. get your crank micro polished. you can use your stock rods and get them shot peened and use arp rod bolts. do it right the first time and you will not be disappointed.

Yeah that's really true. Marvin, like I told you last time, it's cool to do the whole LS vtec setup with out doing any internals, but like Jackson says, you might not be satisfied(depending on how much more power your looking for). Like I said, if you want to get that big upgrade, save the money and do it all at once. That way you have the peace of mind and power that you want. Don't get me wrong though, the Vtec head will give you a significant increase of power, however, many people want more. I say you just wait, and save some money. Look at me, look at how much money I wasted doing that ****. Could save some money and had more power sooner if I been patient and smarter.

thanks JUN
yeah....i guess i'll just purchase whatever i can piece by piece and put it all together at once.
So far ive found a ITR head for $1175 i can get the manifold and distributor cheap.
If u come across itr pistons or some aftermarket pistons and rods cheap.....gimme a holla k?
KAN SA MIDA. puhahahah

i wanna be in the 11.1 to 11.3:1 compression range.

Isn't the ITR head 45.5cc's making it larger than the 45cc's of the LS head thus lowering the compression a little?
