Hey guys can you powder coat plastic? Or does it have to be metal cause of a reaction process?

 

i belive they use alot of heat to powdercoat and sometimes they magnatize the metal and spray a "dust" which has a high iron content so it sticks then they bake it...so in short i believe no

 

why cant you use spray can on the plastic?

 

Well im thinking of getting some fogs for my eg hatch but i want the housing that comes grey black. I would paint this but being exposed to rocks and chips i want something stronger

 

No, you can't.

 

the garnish comes clear coated of some short, sand it, primer it and spray it, then clear coat it, that should do it.

 

You electrically charge the parts to some insane voltage then spray the powder. Then bake it. Since plastic is an insulator, you can't powdercoat it. Thats why there's krylon. You can use some stronger paint, I something maybe epoxy based or something, but powdercoat chips too, its not invincable.

is your front bumper powdercoated?

Powder dosnt contain iron or any type of metal, its a resin and a pigment nothing more. It's also not magnetized, it's charged via tribonetic or coronic electrostatic charge. Some have "metal flake" additives and such but these are usually mica or drybonded metallic flakes. Yes you can powder coat plastic, just like you can powder coat wood, and much much more. There are a few ways to do it, but it must be a high grade plastic. One, you can use a copper plate or another conductive liquid spray on it to give it a conductive surface, than coat, or you can fluid bed coat it which means heating the part and creating a fluidized powder bed and dipping the part into the bed and out, followed by a full cure. There are also a ton of electrostatically enhanced powders on the market with much lower cure schedules.

 

too hot when powder coating for plastics, and you cant magnatize plastic either.

just use a lot of coats of paint, then some good clear coat and you wont get that many chips in it. and when you do, just some touch up paint and you are good to go!!!

hey I sell that.don't buy it, it'll definitely peel real soon.I used some $.99 fast drying enamel from Pep boys on my fogs I just got.It worked pretty good,no chips in a week.Good luck.

 

I've never tried it, but the TV commercials sure are impressive.
