You pretty much figured it out all by yourself. And to help you make the right decision, a ball joint puller is what you need and you can buy that at most local automotive stores. They have two kinds BTW (to my knowing)... the first is the hammer type, where you stick the fork in between the joints and hammer to get them out, the other is a clamp type puller. I would recommend the 2nd one.

Next time just unscrew the castle bolt a bit (maybe 1/4") and hit the bolt with a hammer. Couple of wacks will do it. If you completely remove the castle nut you run the risk of damaging the threads or having the knuckle and control arm spring away from each other.

some people remove the axle by unbolting the LCA from the body.
