Default This is what happens when your cam gear slips and advances itself all the way

Yesterday I was driving up a bridge when my car lost all power. When I looked into it my exhaust cam gear loosened up and advanced itself all the way. Here are some pics.

Head all unbolted and ready to look and see how bad the damage is (toda header blinging)

Here are a few shots with a light under the valves. You can see the light shining up through the bent valves

Here is one of a piston. Luckily none of the pistons were damaged. Just a minor mark on all 4 of them.

Im not sure what im gonna do. I have 3 choices: part it out, put it back as is, since the head is off slap some ITR pistons in there and get a little more comp.

I think I am lucky that no piston damage occuerd when this happened and just wanted to post some pics of what happens when u advance a s2s2 exhaust cam 10+ degrees.

Well, when we did the install that cam gear had a slight wobble to it and im sure thats what caused it to back off and then slip. I didnt pay no mind to the cam gear being like that cause you could barely even tell it was wobling. I guess at 8500-9000 rpms that small movement at idle is soemthing serious in the upper end. If i decide to keep my set up I will be ordering the above cam gears so this will not happen again. As to how the cam gear got like this I do not have any ideas. It could of been that way from skunk 2 or it could of got messed up during install which I highly doubt. No point in blaming a company or blaming myself cause it wont fix my 8 bent valves.

I'm actually pretty impressed that it was able to advance 10 degrees with stage 2's and only have that much valve to piston contact. I would think you would have some serious problems with that much advance; more so than you do now.

been there done that. i had just installed my JUN 3s and full JUN valvetrain back in 01 or so and i forgot to tighten the cam gear bolts. slip, clap clap clap clap, a dead motor and 8 exhaust valves later i was on the road again. good thing i had a spare B16 head just sittin in the garage at the time.
