How much for timing belt replacement?
I went to a shop today and the guy quoted me about $330, and it seemed really high to me. What's a dealership rate, alot more? Is it that difficult to change one yourself? Thanks.
$330 is a pretty good deal. He probably is not replacing everything that is normally done in a timing belt change. The tensioners alone are like $100
Yeah i dont think he knows what he is up againts. The first time i let honda do it cause i could not get anyfree time cost me $1000. The second time you best believe i changed it myself....easy as taking of panties. Just time consuming.
If you don't have a helms, i wouldn't try it if you nerver done it b4
might wanna get your waterpump changed at the same time.

I paid 320 for a reputable local shop to do it. I Wasnt about to screw up a car I had just goten at 80k.
I did my service at arround 105k. I paid 320 and that was with new cam seals since mine were leaking.
They inspected the waterpump, and tensioner, They didnt try to charge me for anything else, so I guess all was well since they inspected it.
126k, now... Ill probally go back to them again.

Dealership here wanted around 800 for the timing and balance belts, water pump, and labor.
Another shop (treadquarters i think) said around 400 for the belts only replacement.
Parts at the dealership - 100$ for the two belts, 100 for the pump, didn't ask about the tensioners (I have a 92 si)
Basically I hit up prostreetonline with a coupon code and got plenty of stuff for 170$. two belts, the two tensioners, water pump, and two new springs for the tensioners. add in 80$ for the helm's, and my timing belt replacement cost me 250$ bucks, skinned knuckles, and a big gash in my thumb.

that's not a BAD price, but it's not convincing. If they know the labor involved...and have done it before, 330 seems low. It's a big job, because you basically have to pull the engine (or very close to it) to get any clearance whatsoever. I pulled mine to do it, and a lot of other things while I'm at it, but if you don't have a helms be cautious. Also the tensioner will give you trouble, if it's a VTEC model, because it's auto, and you need a special tool to put it in...have fun, don't spend a lot.

Damn man, always do the water pump when you do the timing belt - jeez the timing belt on the 97+ lasts so long that you may as well do the pump when the belt's off...

it really depends...
when you do a timing belt job..... you absolutly have to take off the water pump.... but it doesn't mean it has to be replaced for a new one....
just taken out....

That's what I'm going to have done as well. I might just have to see if a friend of mine that's a certified honda tech can help me, I don't want to mess anything up. Even with a Haynes/Helms I'm petrified of messing something up.

Went to the local dealership today, this is what I asked to be quoted for, and prices.
balance shaft belt- $52.04
timing belt- $55.64
tensioner pulleys- $70.23
water pump- $99.68
Total is $277.59, and not including labor. Is there anything else I should get done while they have it, if so what... Also, does this sound about right for that stuff? I know it is a 6 hour job (by the book atleast) so I will be paying out the *** for all of this, just wanting to double check about everything before I go spending any money. Reason I'm not doing this work myself, is I don't have much hands on experience with a car yet and if I mess anything up...
So I'm just having it all done right the first time.

I don't get it, It's called a 100,000KM service...and 100,000km=60,000miles... So why are you guys waiting untill the car hits 100,000miles to change your timing belt, and water pump. Is it worth fuggin up your head for that or do you guys have super long lasting timing belts down there in US.
Timing belts are usually rated to 90,000, and from what I understand any car that's a '98 and newer is either 115,000 or 120,000 miles.
I'm having mine done soon even though the motor was rebuilt less that 60k ago as a peace of mind thing, I really don't want to have to worry about it and absolutely CANNOT afford to rebuild it if the timing belt snaps again like it did before when in my uncles possesion.

Its called 100K service not KM. 60k is not a normal service interval for Honda t-belts past or present(chains now) FSM recommends replacement at 90-100k. This is pretty normal...

well, I'm replacing my timming belt, the tensioners, water pump, etc. all this weekend on my car which just hit 90k. Most shops wanted to charge me around $650. It's not supposed to be an easy task. I'm giving myself the entire weekend to work on it. The parts cost about $250 in the end for me. But your price is pretty cheap if they're chaning everything out with oem parts.
So do you guys normally get the balance shaft belt and tensioner pulleys? Or would you reccomend just the timing belt and water pump? Would getting the BSB and pulleys replaced take any longer/cost any more?

DEFINITELY get the balance shaft belts changed too! You don't want to see what happens when that one breaks. It'll get lodged in the pullies and mess everything else up! (don't ask me how I know

I think I'm going to go ahead and do everything I listed; timing belt, balance shaft belt, tensioner pulleys and water pump. Any other things I should consider while Honda has it? (Don't have a WHOLE lot to spend, however I'm graduating in about 3 hours so I've been getting some money for that.)
I'm considering doing my timing belt myself. I just hope I didn't bend any effin valves. It basically snapped at idle so I'm hoping it should be okay. Anyway I'm at school and my tools, resources are limited so is this something that can be done with your basic 80 tool craftsman set and jackstands and helms? My main concern is gettin far into this then getting stuck. Being 2 hours from home I know I don't want to have it towed anywhere around here. Never again will I trust mechanics in Albany.

I'll stick to my 100,000KM service
