Default What would you do? LS/VTEC Dilema

I will soon have around 1000 dollars to spend on an engine swap into my 92 GS-R, From what i've researched is that i have two options: B18 or B20

B18- How much of a power increase would i see with slapping on the B17 crank and head? I am wondering if it is even worh doing a b18 if the power increase isn't going to be that great.

B20- I know with the B17 head on this block, power has been around 160 with some decent dyno tuning.

So the question is, what route would you take?

Nick

i dont know about that because machining would need to be done while with a b18 or b20, no machining will have to be done...

do the b20 thing but you will have to run your gsr pistons because if you leave the b20 ones your compression will be pretty low and you dont want that for all motor. it will make a good difference but dont expect an s load of power...

to add....

right now i have a bone stock 98 jspec b18c5
i love this engine, no problems whatsoever

it seems i can never make up my mind what i want to do, BUT if i could return the engine for the money, i would start with a b20z longblock and pick up a newish itr tranny (4.7 FD) and build a head (b16) while im running that.....
then once i have the head built, and other things ready to go along....id swap heads and take that bitch to someone that can tune hondata

probably very cloes to what i spent on my stock itr engine, if not more

i know you dont have this situation, but somehting to think about

nothing at all, i was just thinking that a swap would be the most cost effective way of making power...

The most cost effective way for you to make power, if your bottom end is in good shape, is to pour that $1K into your head. Buy cams and a good valvetrain to go with them, get it milled some, run a 2 layer head gasket, and you would be making an easy 170-180whp depending on the cams.

hmm interesting, i partially want to do the swap too because it is like getting a engine with 30k miles on it.... and b20's have more potential, ( my goal is 200 whp)

Save your money, build a b20 bottom end with the right stuff. You wont be dissapointed.

ive got an ls/vtec. b18b bottom/b17 head. P&P,stock cams, stock header, stock exhaust, stock IM, with CTR pistons running 12.3:1 compression and made 174whp. The power is there....compression is ur friend!
I did a rebuild this winter and ts almost done. I am now running 403's,.25 oversize ctr's,skunk2 im,bored TB,an-r header,2.25" exhaust and some tuning. You do the math....215+whp?

There is one thing everyone should know....if you are concerned about the price, Dont build a motor. The expenses dont end when its put together. Ask anyone with a built car. In the past 2 months i have spent $3500 on parts and machine work. Another $600 is guaranteed for gaskets and reassembly. Just make sure you dont go in over ur head.....and you never get what you put into it. But total i have probably put $6k into the car....which brings it to about $12k with the price of the car included. Depressing.........
