Hi:

When should one change the timing belt on their car. I have changed them at 60,000 and 90,000 miles on two cars as recommend by the mfg. and in both cases, the belts looked new. I have been told that this schedule for belt changes was instituted to help dealers make money. What is the real life of a timing belt?

I don't know, I have 201,000 on mine. I however DON'T recommend you do this unless you pray to God that he holds them together until you can afford to get them replaced(like I did.)
I have known a few people who have broken their belts at around 110,000 miles.
And if you break the belts...you will damage your valves and have a very expensive engine repair. Better safe than sorry.

 

i agree, its cheap to replace the belt not to replace your whole engine, i did mine at 90000 it still looked brand new, i would still do it at about every hundred, its a honda

 

From my understanding you are suppose to change it every 90K mi.
