downshifting to first

Not impossible. Depends on the car. Some are tougher than others.
IME, if it's too much of a fight, I dont go to first...
If your are talkingabout racing/autox, sometimes it isn't worth it, and the smart move would be to keep it in second even though it might "feel" slower than jamming it into first, and torquing hard for .5 seconds, and then having to shift again...
JMO.

This worked in the DS ITR for u-turns. It usually wasn't faster to shift, but if there is enough room to accelerate after the turn it was sometimes good for some time. The question is, can you do it all 3-4 runs without screwing it up?

Depends on the tranny. From my experience D-series are a lot easier downshifting into 1st. The H22 tranny in my SH used to be an exercise in torture at anything over 20mph or so even when double-clutching. The ITR i sampled was a little better. Mind you, a CRX with a well worn d-tranny i drove last year wasnt that great either. My old G1 Teg would go into 1st like butter at any reasonable speed. My current EF Civic (Si tranny) is nice also...
Mind you at 30mph you are better off staying in 2nd as others said. I would say dont shift to 1st unless you are below 20-25mph depending on the car...

goes right in below 25mph on my tranny <shrugs> guess I did something right when I re-built it. anywhere above 25mph wouldn't be worthwhile to go to that low of a gear.

Can anyone second this opinion? My car boggs like crazy if I leave it in 2nd on some of our Auto-x courses, but it is true that if I bring it down to 1st I have to shift again in only a second. I'm not a consistant enough driver yet to really prove to myself one way or the other is better.

keep it in 2nd then. chances are you are faster that way anyway and you can concentrate on where you're going rather than shifting. later on when you're experienced you can make the call to shift or not.
