Default Differences in shift linkage?

I've read this a few times, but I've never believed it.

Is there actually a difference in the shift linkage between a GS-R and a LS?

If so, what is the difference? Obviously if there is a difference than it is more sportier. But is there different angles or something?

It just doesn't make sense to me that a mostly straight piece of aluminum whose only task in life is to move the gear selector on the transmission forward and backward could be changed to make it more sporty.
