Default M&H versus Mickey Thompson slicks

I have an 88 CRX with a B20 turbo making 410HP and 363tq launching on two step between 4k and 5k. I have M&H 23X7X15 slicks and MT 24.5X8X15 slicks and have cut slightly better 60' and 330' on the smaller M&H's.

What I would like to know is if anyone else has ran the MT and the M&H and can let me know if I will be able to improve on my 60' and/or 330' by switching to the 24.5X8.5X15 M&H's. I really dont want to spend more money on slicks just to "see" if they help. Thanks.

If you do decide to buy a M&H slick i would think the 25" would be the way to go. Since you already have the 24.5's.

edit: what 60' times are you managing now?

Best 60' on the MT was a 1.815 with most being in the upper 1.8's to low 1.9's. The best 60' on the M&H was a 1.756 with most being low to mid 1.8's.

1.7's arent bad at all... especially if you can be consistent. What tire pressure are you at? Have you tried launching around 7000 and slipping the clutch a little? How much boost are you making on the 2step?

what transmission and final drive are you running? race weight of the vehicle?

both of those are things to consider as well when choosing slicks.....

A little more info on the car. It is 2300 lbs. with driver making about 3-6 psi of boost on the 2 step and I have an LS tranny. On the dyno the car made 410 hp @ 7k and 361 tq @ 5200. That is on 28 lbs of boost and stock LS head and cams.

I really dont think going up in rpm with the 2 step will help becasue it is spinning the tires as soon as the clutch is let out and doing it all the way through 2nd gear.

If I could cut the 1.7's all the time I would be happy but that was a best and have not been able to do it since.

what tire pressure do you set? Also make sure to check pressure after every run. I think the M&H 25-8.7-13 might work well for your setup. Also going from a 15" rim to a 13" rim will give you more sidewall and be more beneficial.

SORRY BUT MT IS THE WAY TO GO .26s are calling tyour name on this but mhs are also a good tire but they do not last long what so ever the will dry out quickly or have to be treated all the time for the same consistantsy. i think mh also sells 3 different compound slicks but i only heard that through the grapevine m/t is the better choice 1.60 60s al the time

Tire pressure has been as low as 8.5 and as high as 12 but seems to do the best at 9.5-10.

I guess it is decision time for me. I really didnt want to put a 25" or 26" tall tire on the car but it seems that in order to get the 60' down I will need to.

M&H only has one compound, I just wanted to clear this up.

John, didn't you guys used to have two compounds? Or was that two sidwall options? I remember when we run the 25's back in the day, there were two different ones. If i remember right, they were HB10 and HB11? Regardless, in that size slick, M&H is the best tire available. We tried all of them and definitely had the best traction with the M&H's.

I ran M&H's on my streetcar, they were great, and id use em again...

We did, however, have good luck on Gardella's car with the MT's....The MT's were harsh on the driveline with the old honda trannys, but with the xtrac, they take it with a smile..

I run 22x8x15 M/T's on my car right now at 10psi and I've gotten great results (obvioulsy you need a bigger tire than I have since you have double my hp) but I'd suggest you try launching higher on the tires... I personally launch anywhere from 7-8K on mine... If I were you...pre-load the clutch at the staging line (meaning let the clutch pedal out enough to where if you let it out any more it'd nudge the car forward), build a little boost and launch high...

Yes you are right tony1 Marvin did have two compounds back in the old days and it was the HB-10 and the HB-11, but now it's only the HB-11 and it's been like that for years.

I have ran MT and M&H in the past and I only run M&H's now. I would try going a little lower with your tire pressure.

i used three different comapnies slicks from goodyear to MT to M&H. M&H 27inch when it was first released netted the best time so far 1.52 60ft i will always stick by the M&H slick works great

John, it was great talking to you today and thanks for the info and your time. I will be in touch once I decide and/or find some rims. Thanks, Jim.

My vote is for the m&h. From my friends experience with them and also mt, the m&h were better all around. Sounds like you are in the market for the 25's.

We always had better luck with the hb11's, I guess you kept the right ones!
