Default Another slick size question

What I would like to know is what effects going to a bigger slick will have on my e.t. and mph. I was told today that I should stick with my 20-8-14 MT instead of going to a bigger 22-8-13. This person also said that it would slow down my car. The reason I ask is if I go to a 13" rim I will have to buy new rims, plus the slicks, which is not a problem if it will be an improvement. Plus Im going to need new slicks this season. Also somebody on here said to wait untill Im in the 12's before I go to the 22-8-13 but at the elevation Im at now, my car is definitely a 12 sec car. I run consistant 13.5's @ 100 at an elevation of 5000ft above sea level. So I guess what Im asking is, will the 22-8-13's hurt my cars performance? I have a90 hatch with a D series motor with a SI tranny and using a nitrous. I would guess I'm putting down around 175 to the wheels, but have never dynoed the car. The answers I get will decide what I do.

Thanks
Gary

Hi Gorm;

#1 Can you tell me what speed and rpm you want to be @ threw the traps.

#2 Can you tell me what your overall FD drive is like a 4.75 and can you tell me what gear size you have in 4th like a 1.073 you should be @ least at a 8/22-13 but let's make sure.

John, my gear ratios, from what I could find are:

1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.894
3rd: 1.259
4th: .937
5th: .771

The final drive is 4.25.
My car seems to pull the hardest in 3rd gear. The reason for wanting to go to the taller tires is I feel like Im shifting to second before the 60ft mark and I think its killing my times. As for what mph I wish for, anything that would put me in the 12's at my altitude, even if its a 12.999. A chart that somebody showed me said that with the mph I have already, 100.7, being the best, I should be in the 12's, but Im not sure.

Right now, when Im going through the traps I believe Im turning 6500-7000 rpms, but havent run my car since last year, so I couldnt tell you for sure.

Thanks for the help.

HI Gorm; Let's say you go with the 8/22-13 here is the math.

You have a 4.25 x 4th gear witch is a .937 = 3.98 Overall in 4th witch is 6400 rpm @ 114 mph and @ 7000 rpm you will be @ a speed of 116 mph on 22's what is your rev-lim set @.

100MPH wont get u into the 12s. ur already pullin good 60s and cant expect much more from what u have. even with a taller tire with more sidewall i would expect ur 60s to go up because of ur lack of torque.

John,
I see a flaw in your thinking - E.T. and mph are determined by weight and horsepower - not tire size - to run 116mph with 175whp, his car would need to weigh 1450lbs. - i believe he weighs around 2200lbs, which would mean to run 116mph he would need about 270whp - you are right in one thing though, if he could run 116mph, he would be turning roughly 7000rpm - without more horsepower or less weight, he is pretty much going to run around 13.50 at 101mph at 6500rpm on the 20/8/14's - going to 22's will slow him down, in my opinion.

that was my point - with a 22 he will get nowhere near redline - in order to get closer to redline, he would need a shorter tire - ideally, a shorter tire that was wider to compensate for the increased wheelspin - unfortunately, nobody offers one

so what size slicks would be ideal for me??

i want to finish around 120mph, my trans is a 98 gsr w/ a quaife.. i'm also running an sc61, JG IM, and my rev limit will be around 9-9.5k...

i was looking to get some 24" tall slicks or maybe just the 23.5" tall slicks... in a 15 " size....

at 120mph with 22" tire you would turn about 8400rpm
at 120mph with 23.5" tire you would turn about 7800rpm
at 120mph with 24.5" tire you would turn about 7500rpm

Also note, he is spraying a SOHC, most of the power is in the 5000-6300 rpm range......

22's will be perfect.

I plan on going from to them from 20x8x14 MT's once I get enough money.

singlecamscreamer dropped approx .3 seconds just by going to the 22's, and cutting nice 1.7 60's
