I personally would be afraid to drive a car on the streets with a cage... because when you are at the track, you are wearing a helmet, and the helmet would be what comes in contact with the cage... whereas on the street, your skull is what will come in contact with the cage in an accident...

just my thoughts...

how fast do you plan on going? you can get away with a 6 point "roll bar" down to 9.99 and up to 135 mph. Technically you can use a 5 point but most people opt for the passenger side door bar. In this case you won't have any bars up around your head except for the main hoop, which is supposed to be behind your head/seat slightly. The way I have my roll bar in my car I don't forsee contacting it with my head as long as I am wearing a seat belt. The door bars can be padded to make them safer but still might pose a danger to your arms/legs.

S&W race cars will ship a pre bent cage to you that you can install or a local race car shop should be able to install it or make their own. There are other places that will ship pre bent cages as well, chassis engineering, art morrison... Art Morrison are supposed to be really good but I have no personal experience. The S&W stuff fits pretty nicely, but needs some work to make everything fit perfectly before welding.

my S&W cage needed no fitting when i welded it in my 94 coupe, course i had the rear bars custom made, so i guess that would help.

well depending on how the cage is made..if your head is gonna hit a bar youd be screwed anyways..
a cage would definately add to the safety on the street.

so all the pipes fit perfectly with no gaps? i mean no gaps at all. What kind of material did you get 4130 or mild steel? 4130 or moly needs a very exacting fit because it has to be tig welded. I have installed 3 of the S&W cages and all of them needed grinding to make the joints perfect. They plasma cut the notches when they make the bars so I highly doubt that your cage just fell together like you make it sound

i got the mild steel bar, i had some slight trimming to do, but it wasnt crazy, it was expected, nothing will fit perfect without some fitting. so yes i did have to trim some, but not a ton.

From S&W's new catalog a mild steel 8 point roll bar (6 point plus two additional braces for the main hoop) is 149.95 plus shipping. Then you have to factor in the install cost. I think my moly cage was roughly twice that.

in your case i would do a 6 point with swing out bars. They are nhra legal. with this you would only havebars from behind your seat back. just get non-adjustable seats and harnessesand ya straight

It will limit your ability to see when daily driving, you won't be able to move around in the seat to check blind spots and things of that nature i.e. parking lot manuvering, parallel parking....

i used to only wear 4 of the 5 points on my harness and i would were them loose. i got into a bad car wreck with my dash was lying on my lap and i walked out with minor bruising. you don't want to were your harness tight you will limit yourself driving i.e blind spots and operating certian controls like heater, radio. as your head hitting the bars, i really doubt it and you have to place padding anywhere your helmet may come in contact with the roll bar/cage.
