I had the same problem. After process of elimination it turned out to be bad shifter cables. Disconnect the cables from the tranny and see how they feel. From there chech everything else, ie shifter assembly, shifter arm, clutch....

I have seen gears worn so bad that they won't go into reverse anymore (you konw when you grind it into reverse if you're still moving forward)....only fix for that is to replace the collar on the damaged gear (reverse).
To test for this, dissconnect you shift linkage cables from the tranny, and try to put the tranny into reverse by manually moving the shift levers on the tranny...if it won't go in, you tranny's pooched...if it does your shifter/cables are bad.

you an start by process of elimination easiest/logical first
remove cables from shifter assy on the tranny
then manually see if it goes into each gear.
also how did you route your cables?? under car or through firewall??

The linkage may be binding. You can jack up the car and check the cables, depending on how you ran them. Also, you can adjust the linkage at the shifter itself by removing the pin holding the cable on and turning the end-link for adjustability.

So what you are saying is correct
any transmission that does not go in to reverse is the transmission fault?
B series transmissions do it too
Most of the time it is the installers and or drivers fault

Mine did the exact same thing. No matter what i did it wont go into reverse, it felt like there was something stopping it from going into reverse.
I removed the casing and found out that the syncro ring (that wire ring) was bent. I removed it and reinstalled the tranny and it goes in.
