Default OT: Well... my car is dead, estimate repair costs?

First off, let me apologize for posting this in the ITR forum. I lurk all over Honda-Tech, and it seems like the R guys are the most technically minded out of all the little sub-groups on here. (WHICH IS A GOOD THING.) So, please don't flame me for posting this here, I believe you guys know your stuff better than the other Honda guys

-----------------------------

1991 Honda CRX Si

Problem 1: My (what seems to be) rear passanger wheel makes a ton of noise when it's moving. Not really a grinding noise, but kind of a low vibration noise. It never seems to effect anything, so I never really bothered to get it fixed.

Problem 2: My engine makes kind of a ticking sound before it warms up on cold winter kind of days, and lasts until I drive the car enough that the temperature gauge is what it normally is at.

Problem 3: About a month ago my car made this noise for the first time, when I put it in first and started to go it made like a spooling down kind of whining noise. It only did it when I first started my car and it was cold, so I just let my car warm up for a while before driving it. Recently, however, my car has been jumping in to 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd gear, and when I release the clutch it either makes the noise or makes the car jump. This didn't happen all the time, just sometimes. I could drive to work and back most of the time without making it do it more than once.

And TODAY, I'm at home, because my car is dead. Leaving my house this morning I couldn't shift in to 1st or 2nd gear, I figured it was because my car was cold or something and went along on my merry way in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. At the stop sign down my street, I was able to put my car in 1st, then 2nd, but it was extremely difficult. Everything seems to be fine as I accellerate down this road. I stop at a stoplight, to turn left, and again am not able to put my car in to 1st, or 2nd, but this time I'm also unable to put it in to 3rd. I press the cluch a few times, rev the engine, and try to force my car in to gear, and finally got it in to 3rd. The car makes a horrible noise and finally lurches in to gear and goes. At the next stop light, I couldn't get the car to go in to any gears, and I noticed it had died. I started it up again, held the clutch, and tried to put it in gear. With the clutch pedal down, I put it in to 3rd, the only gear it would go in, and the car died immediately when I shifted, even though I had the clutch pedal down.

So, I started my car again, and this time I revved really high and shifted it in to gear and was just barely able to get it going to not have to push it home. On the way home I noticed the clutch pedal had almost no resistance on it except when I pushed it nearly to the floor.

I really don't think the clutch itself is bad. My girlfriend's dad told me a good way to see if your clutch slips or not is by putting the parking brake on and dropping the clutch in 5th gear. When I did this, my car died instantly, so I don't think the clutch is bad.

------------------------

I'd really appreciate any thoughts on how much this stuff might cost to get fixed, parts I could find myself or get for cheap, or even things I could possibly do myself. (I'm not very good with working on cars.) *sigh* This could not have possibly come at a worse time. I've been laid off of my job ever since the stock market has been doing so shitty... So, if anyone knows any cheaper mechanics in the Naperville / Chicago suburban area, please post that too.

*sigh* I hate car troubles, I swear I should just go out and buy a honda insight.

1) wheel bearing.

2) check valve lash

3) initially sounds like your release bearing is hung up on the input shaft of the tranny... pull it apart for sure. dealer will charge an arm and leg for labor... drive you jeep, drop the tranny, and diagnose.

Can someone please tell me how to bake chocolate chip cookies? First off, let me apologize for posting this in the ITR forum. I know better than to post that here, because this forum is supposed to be about the ITR. And I know that there are forums for discussing how to bake cookies, where this post would be welcome. But I also know that many ITR owners like chocolate chip cookies, and many ITR owners either bake chocolate chip cookies themselves or have GF's who do. So, please don't flame me for posting this here, I believe you guys know your stuff better than the other Honda guys

IOW -

This guy has a legitimate problem...and he specifically asked that people like you don't reply. No one FORCED you to click on a thread that was clearly labeled OT.

Then why not post on the TECH forum?

So what you're saying is, it's okay for me to ask about how to make chocolate chip cookies, as long as I label it OT.

Well if you just wanted a recipe you could post anywhere, but if you wanted a dissertation on the advantages of cooking in a gas as opposed to electric oven, or at what approx. rpm your beaters should be set on for mixing or whether or not to use normal eggs or organic eggs, and if so which farms had the best eggs, and then of course which brand of chocolate chips offered the optimal melting point for your application.... well then it'd probably be best to ask here –rob

Jond-Haha, i was reading your post on the nsx forum about putting accord v6 engine in an older nsx with a blown motor and he was giving you a hard time...Kind of makes me wonder why are they in such denial that their "unbreakable nsx" can and will break down just like any other car, even my type R will break down one day but I don't go around bullshitting to myself that it will last forever I just enjoy the time I have with it.

Just my opinion.

Can't help you there IO_burn, but maybe you can help me.

I haven't been here in months, but even when I was, I didn't have time to frequent the CRX section. My CRX floormat has worn all the way through to the metal structure under my right heel. I wonder if it's possible to get a replacement floormat or what the closest, best fitting similar Civic floormat to replace it with is. I temporarily used my extra cheapo rubber floormat on top from the set I bought to use in my ITR to keep mountain biking mud off in it, but it tends to flop up under the clutch.

If you're looking for real advice on a technical issue with an ITR, you run the risk of being led astray because we allow people without and ITR and with no ITR experience to comment on the subject. Their answers are frequently inappropriate for the ITR, and they frequently don't know what they're talking about when it comes to the ITR.
This is a problem in some of the other forums too, such as the NSX forum.

Maybe he'd have received better advice with a post that asked, "Could you please come to the Tech forum to look at my problem?"
I think that's an excellent suggestion.
