any hope for my engine bay?
i took it to a detailer whos specialty is engine bays and he told me i was better off replacing alot of the parts if i wanted them to look thier best.
the valve cover and spark plug cover are being replaced anyway, but is there anything out there that can make this thing look new again? i doubt a regular wash is going to do the trick.

doesn't look to me like anything a little simple green and elbow grease couldn't fix. You could probably paint that rusty PS bracket and then it would probably look almost new. What happened to it that it all looks like that?
i work at a detailing shop where we do engines a lot and mine wasnt as bad as yours but my black plastic peices and other parts still didnt shine like i wanted them too, i highly, HIGHLY doubt yours will too. It will take quite a bit of work. Spraying a little interior dressing in the bay after you spray it down and let it mostly dry will help it look cleaner too
mine was worse than yours after i got it back from the shop.. it's not overspray though.. just really dusty. but i only have a d motor in.. and i'm not gonna clean it until the c5 motor is ordered and the d is out. simple green should do the job.
the previous owner didn't take care of it. i opted not to do any work on it while there was still snow on the ground (got it in january)
a lot of the metal is either oxidized or rusting and the rest just looks like crap. for example, the ground wire running from the valve cover to the chassis need to be replaced.
some of the wiring and a hose or two look like they should be replaced as well(but they could just very well be dirty)
there is some dust/salt over the entire thing (canadian winters are a bitch)

i think there is hope for it... but it'll definantly take some time and patience. i've always liked using that CD-2 engine detailing kit -- comes with two cans, one degreaser, and the other is a dressing type of stuff. some simple green would help too.... along with some flat black paint.
not a big problem here at all...enging degreaser at kragen for like 2 dollars a can...get 2 of em and spray the **** out of ur engine, then rinse it lightly with water and ur **** will be shining...good luck mann...peace
all simple green is, is basically degreaser. Just go buy a big container of degreaser. If you have a pressure washer, thats good but if not, go to one of those local car washes where you pay like 25 cents for 5 minutes and spray the engine down, pressure wash it and do it over and over. You can leave the dist. cab exposed if you spray around it and start your car with the hood open (so the steam rises rather then seeping into it) or just cover it with a plastic bag. i do bays like yours almost everyday. The valve cover is SOL though.

I agree. Just some Engine Brite and elbow grease, along with a little paint for the discolored or rusted brackets, and after that, some rubber/plastic dressing, and you're golden kid
. If you were in SD, I'd help you do it, it's easy.

I've done it to all my friends and my car also
I'll post a pic tomorrow of how it looks after winter without washing it
