Drag Racing - NOT COOL?
What ever happaned to the cool aesthetic if drag racing that we had back in the day (early-mid 90s). These days, spectator counts are low, but the cars are getting way faster than ever imagined. I remember the 1st days of Battle of The imports when the spectator traffic would be backed up for miles to see 11 sec passes in turbo cars hoping to break the 10 sec barrier. Cats would slap hands and get buck wild on an 11.0 sec pass.
I am sure its because of drifting too, but look at the positve side of driting. If we can hold events that have drag racing and drifing we can combine all those people and have huge events! just a thought, but what do I know?

Ya wierd how cars and sponsers are everywhere but attendance is way down. IDRC at palmdale turn out was sad to say the least. Almost looked like a typical test and tune day.
only a matter of time before people start getting sick of cars going around and around drifting, just like they get sick of cars going in a str8 line
**** like stated above if all events had the two combined , it should at least double teh crowd
edit. and double the apc led exhaust tips
damn i gotta get me one of those

its not as easy as you think. we have to turn the steering wheel about 40 + times just to go straight. torque steer is a MO FO.
just look at some in car cam of some powerade guys espeacially TOP FUEL. look at how many times they turn the steering wheel "JUST TO GO STRAIGHT"

But you know what I say about drifting, its Figure skating with wheels and minus the tites. But if it brings people to the events I am all for it.
I dont think I'll be at the event this weekend. Family is coming in for easter and my family comes 1st..

The real problem is that MOST (not all) of the import drivers are sheep. Plain and simple - they hop from event to event based on what their peers think are cool. Its not a passion that they enjoy doing, its what they go and see because their friends say its cool. Look at the import scene (newer japaneese) compared to the older American drag racing scene. Not only in the older scene will you find whole families hanging out and having a bar-b-que along with the race, they will all be there week after week, not because their peers think its the "in-thing", but because they have a true passion for it. Hell, ive gone to see some of the events that have gasser wars, where the same owner has owned the car since the mid 60's - he raced it, let his son drive it, and in some cases the grandson is driving it. Do you really think this is going to happen with any of the hondas? Be honest with yourself, for 99% of the crowd, the answer is no. They will be moving on to whatever is popular, where as the people with the real passion will be the only ones who keep racing. I go to alot of the VW races now (1/8th and 1/4th), and they are as different as night and day compared to the "Import" races. It seems that the latter needs to attract gimmics, such as live music, bikini contests (okay, I'm not really complaning about that), car shows, etc.. The VW concentrates on one thing, and that is the race. Sure, there are folks there just to bbq and have a good time, but the majority of the focus is on the race. It almost seems like the more the Import community trys to make drag racing into a "lifestyle", the more they are pushing away the true racers who really live and breath this everyday. Hell, I stopped going because I cant stand dance music, didnt like the thuggish attitudes from most of the spectators, and didnt want to see lines after lines of people who cant drive, blew through the staging lights, did john force style burnouts in a 16 second car. Once the lifestyle crap is removed, and it gets back to real racing, I am sure me and my Dad will be seen much more often at many of the events..

ha ha kinda off topic(maybe not) but i work in a car audio store , and deal with rice boys all day, but im gonna lose it man, if one more kid asks me if i like my car to be FF or a direct port nitrous injection , im gonna shove there *** in a 15 inch speaker box, then screw the speakers back in! lol

Crowds are still HUGE and growing each year.</TD></TR></TABLE>
It is definitely large and growing in the east, especially the E-town events
I also agree that it needs to be ABOUT THE RACE and not lifestyle/culture. As a person with pasion for the sport I am at every race I can be, and will continue to attend. The "kids" being kids may come for whatever reason, but while there anyone can see what it is about for the true enthusiast and come away with a new pasion of thier own. (or so we can all hope)
At events I will even talk to some of the kids around me about whats going on... the more they understand the better things will be for everyone!!

I agree, I've been going to events all over the mid east here for 11 or 12 years now and every event the crowds seem to get bigger. Granted, about 90% of them are there to see what wing is in style with racers so they can have one on their car BUT you can definitely pick out the real racers and enthusiasts pretty easily. Besides, I think drag racing has always been a little more popular on the east coast.
guys all i can say is that for the last 6 or 7 years that weve traveled all over the country racing in just about every sanctioning body,by far the east coast has the best crowds...its just something about it that no other place has, kinda hard to describe you just have to go to a east coast event......by the way you gotta love the old school rotary cars...

i thought drifting was kind of cool the first thousand times i saw them do the exact same thing.
most of it is so damn slow. if they could do that at like 120 mph or so, then it would be interesting
