A week ago my tranny totally bombed on me and I find out today that 1st gear and everything related to it is totally screwed. My question is, would the first gear set off an LS work? I've heard that the ratios are the same as the GSR tranny, so everything should work fine? I've blown enough money into this thing its making me sick, and basically I need something that will just work. Suggestions would be appreciated; my luck these cars is pathetic. TIA

1st and second are the same. However, the mainshaft 1st gear is fused onto the mainshaft thus you will have to replace the mainshaft as well if you are replacing the entire first gear.
I have a complete first gear (mainshaft and countershaft 1st) that came out of my tranny when I did my 98 Spec R upgrade. I'll sell it to you if you're interested.

Ninjaman, how much you willing to let it go for? So wait, I'm still a newb, there are 2 mainshafts right? One for 2-4 and the other foe 1-3-5 or something?
Here's a link on tranny ratios for B series: http://www.bseries.net/html/specs/btrannyspecs.php
As far as hydraulic B series tranny design goes: There is one mainshaft and one countershaft. Each gear is composed of a gear on the mainshaft and one on the countershaft. The mainshaft has half of first gear fused onto it while the countershaft has half of the final drive fused onto it. That is why we must replace the countershaft when we upgrade our final drive to JDM R spec (98 Spec R).
As far as a price for my parts, the mainshaft is $290 retail and countershaft 1st is $90, so I figure $220 is fair for both. I also have a complete 2nd, 3rd, countershaft, final drive and open differential. If you want any of those, I'll throw em in dirt cheap. I'm open for negotiation since I'm tired of these parts (and others like my AEM CAI, DC header, and clear taillights) taking up space in my house.

This seemed like a good thread to ask my question. I am in the market to buy a new tranny because my LS is grinding going into second. I want to take my old tranny and learn how to rebuild it. How hard is it to learn? With a book (any advice on a book?) could i learn to do it? Thanks
