*Photoshop tutorial - how to create an Action*
It seems like a lot of people have been asking random Photoshop questions lately, most of which seem to relate to borders, sigs, resizing, etc. There are numerous ways to accomplish each of these tasks, and if you're new to PS or have a short term memory, it's easy to forget these steps. Actions in PS are like macros in that they perform a sequence of recorded steps in order to complete a task, without having to remember the steps. On with the tutorial:
In this example, we'll just do something simple like resizing an image to an 800x600 resolution. Once you have the image that you want to resize open, start with step 1.
Step 1: Open the Action palette

It will look something like this:

Step 2: Creating the Action
-click on the "create a new action" icon in the lower right corner of the Action Palette seen here:

This will bring up a window that allows you to name your new Action. I'd just name it "resize action" or something. Your Action will be saved under the "Default Actions.atn" folder seen near the top of the Action palette, or you can create your own Action folder to save it under.
Step 3: Start recording the Action
After you name your Action and click OK, the recording process begins. Now just go through your normal resize steps. (Image --> Image Size). *Bear in mind that you can record anything at this point...your custom signature, unsharp mask, filters, etc., my resize steps are purely for the sake of this example).
Step 4: Stop recording the Action
To stop the recording process, click the "Stop Recording" icon in the bottom left corner of the Action palette seen here:

Your action is now complete and should be seen here:

Step 5: Play/apply your Action
Now that your Action is complete, you can apply it to any image. Basically, any image you apply the action to will become an 800x600 sized image automatically, without you having to go through any of the steps. To apply your Action, simply click on the "Play Selection" icon seen here:

Great write up the only thing I would add is that you can creat actions within actions.
For instance I have an action that de-creases my image size by 5%. I then have another action that has the whole re-size process in it, which equals about 15 5% de-crease actions and a few sharpen filters thoughout... So i can then click the play for re-size and it does all the actions...

Good idea. I didn't want to get too complicated with it though.
There are websites you can go to and download other people's actions and then load them into your Action palette and play them. Pretty neat stuff.
