what caused my distributor to smoke?
i recently installed Denso Iridium spark plugs when i had my car dyno tuned. i was using NGK bkr7e-11 prior to tuning and the tuner told me to use a heat range of 8.
after the tuning, the car felt more responsive and the pinging sound when i accelerate with the A/C ON went away. after more than a week, i noticed that the car would jerk a couple of times while waiting for the light.
this morning it was worst, the car would jerk and the engine sound is not linear as if only 3 cylinders are working. the car would hesitate like hell and jerks while accelerating, then at about 3k rpm, the car would dash forward and run smooth but not during idling or acceleration.
i drove the car home right away and as i was backing up to our steep driveway, i could hear a funny sound that i have no idea what it was. i parked the car and pop the hood, i could see smoke on the side of my MSD blaster SS coil and the distributor. i lean down and there was a nasty burnt smell from the dizzy cap while only a slight burnt smell from the blaster SS coil.
since i'm going to be late for work, i had no time to troubleshoot further so i replaced the MSD plug wires with the stock plug wires and replaced the iridiums with the BKR7E-11 and everything went back to normal and i was able to drive to work.
right now, the culprit would be the iridium plugs or the MSD wire and since i'm still at work, i can't find out which one yet. do you guys have any idea which one is the cause of the problem.
lastly, why is there smoke and burnt smell from the dizzy if the plugs or plug wires are the problem?
here's the ignition mods:
MSD 6A
MSD plug wires
MSD blaster ss coil
modified dizzy cap
iridium spark plug
the car is turbocharged if it matters.
PS. are iridium spark plugs gappable? if so, with special gapping tool or ordinary tool will do?
any help would be appreciated. thanks.
