Default 87 civic motor problem...daily driver

i have a carbrated 86-87 civic 4 door that has acceleration problems..it is a automatic tranny.. when i press the gas it will have a hard time accelrating and almost die on me before i hit 1,500 rpm then when i pass that certain rpm it is fine...this problem happened when i added that bars stop leak radiator stuff to it. i dont know if that has anything to do with it, but i think it does for some reason... any info from you guys whould be greatful... one time on the freeway it died on me again. the rpm went to zero and the engine started to sputter and die.. then i waited on the side of the road (like 2-3 mins wait) to start it up again and it did.. then it worked fine like always.. i then changed the ignition coil and fuel filter to try to solve that problem... hope some one has a clue to my problems i'm having thanks again.

Have you checked the transmission for the proper level of fluid. Check it when the car is warmed up. You also might have a clogged catalitic converter. Good luck

i just replaced everything with a full tune up so that cancels the sparkplugs...i recently changed the secondary fuel filter and that helped for a little while...im thinking i need to do a carborator rebuild.... And why would the cat be clogged up? And how can you check that it is clogged up and what can i do to unclog it? The car passes smog and everything... I yea i added that chevron techron fuel system cleaner the other day and it didn't help at all so far....do you guys think i need a new distrubutor? There is little oil in there in the cap and the cap and all the insides have this red powder stuff all over it... what is that?

The catalitic coverter would be clogged from old age, rust or even a extended time of a rich fuel mixture. Years ago it was not uncommon for cars to have 2 or 3 converters over there lifetime. You need to bypass the converter with a test pipe and test the car it or have someone test the system with a belive they call it a flow meter. The only way to repair it is to replace it. I think I would start with that distributor though. At least a cap and roter and check the play movement in the shaft.
