i don't have rears at all i just have a set of Memphis Audio 6 1/2" components up front. Most competition sound quality cars don't have rear fill at all. if you just spend some money and get some quality speakers that image nicely up front you'd be golden.

I have the pioneer 130 watts up front and the sony xplod 6x9 280 watts in the back.. although I don't use them for bass because I have a sub and I want them to put up high pitches only. They are wired through the deck and they sound loud enough for me, when it's cranked it hurts before it starts to crack.. again that is without the speakers putting out bass though.

get some nice 6 1/2's and you'll be happy...if you want to spend some more money to make it sound even better, invest in some either pre-fabed kickpannels or pay a competent shop to make you some (DIY if you have fiberglass experience).

6.5" will fit fine, just make an adapter ring out of MDF to help mount and space the speaker out..
For front speakers Boston Acoustic makes some nice ones in the $100 range (FX6), or you can spend more and go with a nice component set (CDT, JL, Alpine, etc), though you'd probably also want to look into getting an amplifier if you went with components.
Just watch out for the depth of the speaker magnet, or you won't be able to roll down your window all the way

w/ speakers it is all about personal preference...if you like the "bright" sound of a metal dome tweeter then something like MB Quart you would love...if you don't like the brightness then go w/ a soft dome tweeter which are going to be much smoother (less "ear fatigue"), then go w/ something like Memphis Audio. but building something to improve the imaging in a EG is a MUST!
Either of these would be a nice choice:

I saw this thread and couldn't stand idle.
I used to work audio (mostly home), but I dove into car audio for fun.
If you're looking for really high quality stuff, stay away from the name-brands (sony expecially... i know too many people that tried other brands and never went back). I put in some speakers by Focal Audio and MB Quart. They are the 2 brands that I've fallen in love with. Everything else just doesn't sound as good. I don't mind using stuff like pioneer and alpine for my folk's car. If you're looking for a middle of the road, stick with alpine, boston acoustic... For a general idea of prices for Focal audio and MB Quart, look at e-bay. Prices range 150 - 700+ dollars. (Price does = quality).
2cents.

Pioneer sucks ***. I just swapped all 4 of my speakers out today (old setup was some pioneer 3 ways up front and kenwood 2 ways in the rear) for some Polk/momo speakers. It made a BIG difference. i picked up the 6x9 and 6.5 for 180 with tax, when everything is supposed to be 450 without tax (i work at circuit city as an installer). oh yea BTW i drive a 00 hatch.
