'84 Prelude - swapping auto tran for manual
I won't to ya'll; I'm new and damn naive to the outfitting of cars. I'm 16 and don't know much more than the advanced basics of common info about cars (whatever that's supposed to mean).
I've got an '84 Prelude with a dual-carb 1.8 engine. I want to swap out the engine and tranny. For the engine, I'm thinkin' an h23, but - again - I don't know all that much about it. And I want to price-check the cost of purchasing a manual tranny. I'm sure installation will be a lot more, so estimations about those are fine.
I'm not exactly in the market for anything yet, as I haven't even gotten out of d.e. But I have high-hopes for this car. And, if all else fails, maybe I'll have to rice the car.
Though I'd hate to do that - but I'll def. get 17" rims - when it ain't got no beef to back it up.
Anywhoopsadoodle... What do ya'll think about the cost of purchase/set-up of the manual and removal of auto. Also, engine recommendations?

h23 will be nice but h22 will be even better. h23 is the non vtec version of the h22. I think both of them with tranny, ecu and wireharness will run somewhere around $2000. upwards of $600 to install. youll need custom mounts etc

This project will be quite a task. But I say if you have the desire then go for it.
I dont know about others, But i have NEVER seen a h22 2nd gen. That would DEFINATELY be a sleeper.
To fab the H22, You will Need a complete Engine/tranny assembly You can pick these up on ebay with less than 50k for about 2 grand. These are also more powerful JDM units.
Get a USDM H22 feul rail.
Then you will need to Get a USDM H22 wireing harness and computer(pre 96 would be easier to setup)
You wont be able to Use many 84' parts in this swap because Things have changed so much over the years.
The engine will need to be custom set in there, And you will need to get you a welder shop to make brackets and mounts for it.
The wireing will be your call and can be custom done by you, but I recomend that you try to put things in their factory location so it will be clean.
You will need to convert your tank lines to efi, with a feul return line, and a High volume feul pump to run the efi.
the 84 manuals were cable shift. The h22 has a hyrdo clutch pedal. So I would Get a whole hydraulic system out of a 3rd gen 88-91, Those years will probally require the least modification to make it fit.
Cv's Are gonna be a problem-- You can use the 5spd Intermediate shaft out of a 4th gen/5th gen lude.
Both gens have differen sizes, But that wont matter, Because youll Need custom cvs made by a driveshaft shop becasuse there is no telling how you can set it in. You will have to put it in as you see best. and measure the at the end of the project.
You will need a h22 shifter out of a 4th or 5th gen prelude, and custom mount it in the interior of your car.
I cant think of anything else... Is it me, or is that list of things just a tad demoralizing if you had to do all those? eventually Ill be doing those types of swaps for a living thhough..
