I was teaching my sister how to drive a 5-speed, ya ya im stupid trying to teach on my R, but anyways she got it up to 9200rpm or more, i just stared at the rpm gauge..... and i could smell my clutch burning...my question is could there be any damage to my engine and clutch?...should i be looking out for anything, cause i drove it and it seems normal?..by the way could it also lag power also by the burnt clutch??..my last ?, have any of you guys done this?..i hope i have nothing to worry about
9200???? do you have something other than stock ECU? the highest ive ever gotten mine while pinging the rev limiter is 8704
you'll know if its fugged up, if it idles like shiat. If nothing is noticeable more than likely your ok. type R springs are good for 9000 rpm.
was that the indicated tach RPM ? cuz its off by ~500 which means u actually took it to maybe 8700 which really shouldnt have hurt anything. Stil lwould be good to get the valves checked just to make sure.

i think it was 9200rpm?..maybe not sure, but she was at redline for sure...i was just scared shittttttt seeing my tach go up and down...my car idles normal, but i think it lags in power now...maybe my scared imagination??.....it idles normal at 500-1000rpm....should i have anything to worry about?
Your Tachometer is NOT acurate at those high RPM's. Or My rev limit is 9100!!
As long as it did not hit that high on a DOWNSHIFT, only while accellerating (or smoking the clutch) there is a rev limit that will protect the internals. You should be fine,
JUST DONT LLET HER DRIVE IT ANYMORE
Its not a car to learn on!!!!! Go get her a beater...

It sounds like u'r okay there. But the clutch sounds like it got overheated. But thank the R God that u'r valvetrain is still good

hey BUzzman...lets hookup sometime....my boys got 2 other R's out here....thanks for the advice..everyone says not to trip...i hope everything is cool with my internals
I wouldn't sweat it, I mishifted once and it went to 9k plus rpms. I was really paranoid dispite my car seemed normal. Someone mentioned that they misshifted and hit high rpms and it didn't have an effect till later. So I took it to the dealer and they assured me that if there was any damage OBDII would have picked it up b/c its so sensitive. I went ahead and got a compression check and got 210 across the boards

one of my boys lives in burlingame, and otherl lives in san bruno..yellow and cw ITR's
Bah! Your valvetrain is fine. I bounced off my 9100 RPM rev-limit (9600 indicated) a number of times during my race last weekend
Not to say that I enjoy doing it though

Siblings......gotta love'em
Defintely get a beater. I rented a Ford Escort POS and if it wasn't for the insurance that I got with it I would have had to pay for the transmission I destroyed.

don't worry man. I had miss-shifted last april with 5k miles on my R. It got up to 9500 rpms and my car runs strong as hell. However, my compression numbers a little bit low for a brand new car. They've ended up around 200 for each cylinder last time i checked. I've been checking with every oil change so far. I thikn our cars should be around 220s new.
i did about crap in my pants when i saw the tach go up that high.
good luck

i redline on a daily basis...i like hanging out at the local wal-mart parking lot...and just rev my engine..we have reving competitions...i always win cause i just floor it for like 5 seconds...sounds real sweet
wait... i assume u were in the car when u were teaching her, why did u let her go to redline? if she is learning, she shouldnt be shifting at that high of RPM anyways, am i right?

YA...i was in the car...i guess she just felt the adrenaline of the R and floored it...i was teaching her how to balance the clutch...but she stepped on the gas and then she stepped on the clutch, so it got burnt pretty bad because i smelled it for about 2 hrs......im wondering if i should take it to a Acura Dealer??...should i hask them to check the compression and what else????
i don't think you need to do compression tests. i am assuming though that your sister didn't downshift and cause thise (i.e. mis-shift). if she was just in gear and punched it, you'll be just fine. as for the burning smell of the clutch- yea, you burned it SOME so you might have to replace it sooner than it would have lasted, but we're not talking next week or anything.
Do a search on 'rev limiter' it'll make you feel better.
here's one that will help you relax

for the rev limiter...would the engine shut off??, or just the lack of power will come....because when she got scared she started to shift it in every gear, but she didnt let go of the clutch, its good that she had it down...but when the cars tach went down she shifted it in some gear and the car started moving ..i think she put it in 2nd...everything was fine on through there.....what u guys think?..should i be worried??..because i am ONE paranoid kid?
yea, i think you're being paranoid. (which is good- it'll help you take care of your car
)
as for the rev limiter. ... it prevents you from going over 8600 RPM. while it's not a good idea to routinely drive up to it and just sit there (IMO
) occasionally hitting it isn't a problem. Trust me. I've hit it on 2 different road courses and didn't think anything about it (except- 'whoops, forgot to shift') .
once the tachs went down, you definitely wouldn't have a problem (well, maybe a little clutch abuse, etc. but nothing to sleep over.)

No seriously though, I don't think a one time thing like that would cause any major malfunction. Unless of course she downshifted, but that wasn't the case. Now if she held it at 9200RPMs for about more than 30 seconds (Pulled that out of my ***) then I would start to worry. But I've seen some people do burn outs just hitting the rev limiter. As far as the clutch smelling, did she have the clutch engage? That happens to new drivers, always keeping their foot on the clutch. Doesn't mean anything, just means that you might have to replace sooner than someone that doesn't play with the clutch. Don't sweat it. If something does come up then you know what happened.
