$2004 GRM Challenge Report!
WOW! What a weekend!
17 hours each way from Austin to Gainsville towing a trailer and 5 people all crammed in a Toyota. Don't even ask us how much we spent in gas!
The event was incredible! There were about 100 cars entered this year with everything from an 86 CRX body tacked onto an 80's vette frame (No, I'm not kidding!) to a 2 year old Kia Rio (now THAT's depreciation!) were there to compete to be the best $2004 and under car. I lost count of all the V8 RX7's and there was even a rotory powered VW Bug.
CRC Motorsports (us) brought our little Super Bee (yellow 88 CRX with a b16, full cage, etc) out to see how she stands up against people from all over the country. And do you know what? It did great!
The first competition was a drag race on friday. We could take as many runs as we wanted and the Rex made 27 runs without a hitch. Unfortunetly a lot of other cars didnt fair so well. A number of cars were killed that day including a poor VW Scirocco that accidently shifted into 2nd instead of fourth just as he hit the nitrous. The engine parts didn't quite go through the hood but the hood is pushed up rather well from the pieces hitting the underside of it.
On saturday the autocross was held. We immediatly realized we had made a big mistake in not begging some of our friends to let us use some used race rubber. EVERYONE in a competitive autocross car had them!! There weren't as many car deaths that day but a Ford Cortina blew it's tranny and it took a while to clean up all the pieces.
Here's how we did in the event:
Drag Race - 45th place with a 15.341 and a reaction time of .022
Talk about traction issues!! We need drag slicks next year!
Autocross - 14th place with a 56.137
Not bad for street rubber.
Concours - 38th place
And our overall placing at the $2004 GRM Challenge was (drum roll please)
28th place with a final score of 199.336!
btw - the highest score of the event was 231.768
Not too shabby for a first shot at this event. We are diffinetly going again next year with more cars. We already have another CRX in the works and a Triumph Spitfire is slated to come along. There is even a Taurus SHO powered 911 that should be done in time.
Thanks to the GRM staff and the Buccaneer Region's volunteers for making this event possible!

#72 and friends were kind enough to let me take the Super Bee around the autoX course a couple of times, it was a very well sorted car considering the budget, quick, ultra-nimble, honda reliable and easy to drive (although the heavy front-brake bias did inspire me to try the car's rally abilities for a few seconds, which it handled with aplomb!).
Thanks again for the ride guys, great effort this year and we can't wait to see what you come up with for 2005!

Yeah Bill helped us learn the art of corner balancing. Plus he's a good guy and we were proud to fly his colors.
And the Suprang seemed to have held up for the whole event. I don't know how he finished though.

I cant remember if you post in the origional post(like a week ago?) but what kind of tires were you running and suspension setup?

Hey Scott the in car video is real funny. you went in way to hot and then went to full lock up .. Then went to a screaming girl voice.....
I thought i was going to wet my pants after watching that.. You had a good run but were a little timid on the throttle..

what was the setup on this car?
we ran a 1st gen CRX with an 89 DOHC integra engine with a SAAB turbo in the $2002 challenge. It didn't look nearly as nice as yours does. We definitely started on it too late (2 weeks before, eeeekkkk!!) and we had an oil problem that kept us from drag racing. It was a blast though. We rented an RV and trailered it down. Best decision we made was the RV. It was great to hang out in and we didn't have to drive to the event from a hotel. We just parked it in the lot the night before and we wake up at the track!!
It was so much fun. Man, I'd love to do it again. Too bad they did drag race first again. I think they should do the drag racing last. That way you can push the setup and if you blow it up, no biggie cause the event is over!
Nice job guys.

wow. you guys did a lot with $2k. b16a and a cage alone are hard to work into that budget. Nice work.

Actually the B16 was in the car when we bought it but it had a bad wiring harness so it didnt run. When we put in the good harness it was fine. Nice huh?
And we made the cage ourselves (with instruction from a master cage builder).
The video is on tape right now but I 'm sure we will upload it shortly

There are sure a bunch of we's in there..... We as in my wife and i bought the car and we as in Jason and i built the cage ( you were busy racing that weekend remember? )
Its odd how i have been trying to get people behind my car for months and at the end there is a team going ( we did a good job...)

That sounds a little rough.... Kevin may not be a great wrench turner but he is one hell of a good driver....
We let a pro driver take a lap in the car and he only beat Kevs time by 1/10. Now this guy is the SCCA points champ and had no less than 20 laps on the track ..... Good job Kev....

Haha, yeah, that sounds about right, I was waiting to hear an ugly crunch or something as I drove your creation off into the grass, fortunately nothing bad happened...I was being a bit ginger with it (not so much that i didn't fly off the course, naturally), but it's funny how you drive something you own versus how you drive somebody else's baby (and when you know how inexpensively it was built, you might be a little more hesitant again). Most of us at the office wish we had the time to put on the event and build something...David and I were talking about how a CRX is probably one of the best choices for winning the AutoX. Get some race rubber for next year and let me play again!

Yes, Rene built one hell of a little car for a guy that never liked Hondas before. Every event I drove it after he made improvements shocked me. It's very fast, very solid, and very reliable. Heck, it was even almost $300 UNDER BUDGET!!!
And the way he made it look good (you should have seen it when him and Laura got it) is downright miraculous!
Thanks again Rene for building the Super Bee. Thanks Laura for dealing with Rene being at the shop nightly (and for keeping the budget in order). You guys rock
