Gas tank rusted out - 155,000 miles
I just wanted to share an experience I had with everyone here. I have a 1994 EX with 160,000 miles on it. At about 155,000 miles I began to smell gas when I got out of the car. Upon inspection, I found out that the tank was leaking under one of the straps that holds it in the vehicle. I couldn't find a new tank anywhere for less than about $270. Autozone, etc., couldn't get a tank for a 1994 - only up to 1993, I believe. Wound up calling a junk yard and got a tank out of a 1997 with low miles on it for $75. The tank came with the fuel pump and sending unit. I had to swap the fuel pumps because they were slightly different. Now my fuel gauge even works! Before this, my gauge never worked because my sending unit was bad. So, just to warn everone who has a vehicle with around 150,000 miles and a metal tank. It may start leaking soon.
No problem. I just wanted to give people a heads up. Problem is, if you inspect it, you really won't be able to tell if it's close to leaking because more than likely, it's going to rust out under that strap because of all the dirt and moisture it traps under there and you really won't be able to see the corrosion. Being in Michigan, the environmental conditions are probably worse for me than most other areas.
