Default timing question?

just checked my timing and when i set it to tdc the tick marks on the cam gears aren't lining up. when i do line them up, the white mark on the cranksaft pulley isn't lined up with the tab! is this goin to cause piston, valve contact?? need some info asap! thanks!

Another R owner asked the same thing a while back. I think the conclusion was that is normal. How far off is the TDC mark on the pulley in relation to the tab?

it's a little more than a 1/4" off. i loosened the timing belt tensioner and lined everything back up and it seems to be running fine for now atleast. its got some ticking goin on, but i think that it needs a valve adjustment. i really don't think that it's a bent valve. i could be wrong though.

Unless your off a whole tooth on the gear, I highly doubt you will bend your valves.

Normal to be off, I think it is rare to find one that is dead on.
Double check by pulling the timing belt off the gears, realign everything (Cam gears lined up, White mark matching the pointer), put back on the belt and than tighten the tensioner. Than it will be as close as its going to get, if you want it perfect: adj. cam gears
