Default Road America... and the NSXPO 2K1 track event

That track is much cooler in real life than in CART Flag to Flag. Hard on brakes, though. My rotors will not soon forgive me. Pads were fine, though.

The highlight of the track event has to be the fact that Acura of Brookfield brought 2 lifts, tools, a bunch of parts (and fluids), and like 5 people to the track for both days, and were there to do all kinds of stuff from oil changes, brake service, turning rotors, mounting new tires, to fixing up the front end of one car that hit the tire wall gently to get him back on track for the next session. All that in itself is not TOO incredible.... What *is* incredible to me is that they REFUSED to take money for anything but parts.

Now, a *very* close second would be the fact that RealTime racing was there with the NSX and Pierre's Type-R (PD was there, but Pierre wasn't). I rode with Nathan (he was my instructor) in a stock RSX-S for a session, and lemme tell you, I've never experienced anything as cool as getting dive-bombed by the RealTime NSX on the inside in the braking zone of turn 12 (Nathan new it was coming, but I didn't), with it belching fireballs out the tailpipe, and then watching it speed away up the hill under the bridge around turn 13.

Another highlight was chasing the RealTime Type-R down the straight from 3 to 5 after we both got a pass signal from someone else, and pulling on it (me in my NSX). Of course, once we got to the braking zone of turn 5 I didn't see much of it again.

Oh yeah, and the RTR NSX was on yokohama slicks the second day, and running full boost. When it started from the pit lane, it was going as fast as the traffic on the straight by the time it go to the pit exit. And I heard someone say he was pulling 105mph through the carousel. I was hitting the Apex at 80, and I don't think my tires (Kumho 712s) had much more. Heh.

Turn 5 in the wet was fun. 35mph and STILL goin' slideways.

I think turn 13 might be my favorite.

And I'm not sure which is scarier, the kink (turn 11 at Road America ) or Turn 1 at SIR. I only got up to about 95mph in the kink (track out at 100mph). I've never taken turn 1 at SIR flat-out, but if I did, I'd be hitting that pavement change at 140-145mph.

Mike:

Wish I had known the event was going on, I'd have tried to get there. Not having an NSX, I don't keep up with the NSXPO stuff. Having only ridden along on worker rides at RA, I can share your opinion on the track, it's very cool. One of Wisconsin's best kept secrets.

Your experience with Acura of Brookfield is why I drive 70 miles to have them work on my car rather than 15 miles to have the local Acura dealer work on my car. They're service is top notch (of course I never get it for free!). From what I understand, that's a standard race weekend for the guys at AOB. At one time, they were providing track support for 9 NSXs and one Viper.
