Default Do D4 warnings disappear ... or is my mind playing tricks on me?

I am a new to Honda vehicles. A few posts ago I mentioned seeing a flashing D4 light. Then I wasn't sure if it was really a flashing D4 light I saw or if it was just a steady light around the D4 ....Mmmm, how did this happen? Well, for one thing I decided to pull the CEL codes after I first got the car just to see if there was anything there. At that time I did not know about the D4 as an abnormality, so I probably ignored it and my best guess is that that flashing I thought I saw, was probably the D4 code flashing at me. Since then I removed the battery cables and the ECU fuse and back up fuse. I guess those D4 codes will return if it is anything a fluid change doesn't address. Does this analysis make any sense?

Now when I turn on the key I get these lights (sorry, but I didn't get an owner's manual with the car), D4, SRS, Door position, and CEL, for a moment and then all four go away. These following lights stay on: Engine oil and battery top left; Brake and seat belt top middle; ABS in yellow far right. But no D4 light staying on. Is this all normal?

Btw, what is the color of the Honda Z1 ATF? Is it a mostly a clearish liquid? (The ATF level is full and looks clean).

Thanks,
diyer

Now when you say turn the key, you mean in the "on" position and the motor has not been started. Yes that is normal, what lights up after the engine is started? There should be a glow around the d4, d3,2,1 etc etc to show you what gear you are in, if that is out check your guage cluster lights.

My ATF is like a clearish red

I have been avoiding starting it trying to prevent any further problems. I will start it though to see. Should there be any dash lights on when the engine is running?

Yes the dash lights shows my shift lever position.

Thanks,

What do you mean your not starting it trying to prever further problems, what else is going on? It sounds like all the "lights" are going on ok, are you getting a CEL or flashing d4 light?

I happened upon this car by accident. No pun intended. Some lady had gotten her insurance money out of it and wanted to give it away free (no kidding). It was in a crash but I determined that it was fixable (mostly cosmetic damage). The daughter drove it overheated. I tried to talk her into fixing it but she said if you don't want it I'll give it to someone else. So, I started looking closer at things. The water pump is leaking and the oil was filthy; (insert the D4 issue here). I have been doing little things - re-torque the lugs; correcting tire pressure; check the fuses; check for any codes; fan was not working (shroud was smashed against the front motor mount and the fuse was blown); did comp test on cyl's and replaced plugs (fired right up too, ut hard starting with worn plugs at 0.070 - must have been the originals)

You get the picture - so, if the tranny has a problem I would like to know. I didn't drive it yet. Torn between towing it and driving it to a friends Honda repair shop for a hydrocarbon test of the coolant. Saw some white smoke on a cold day and the car was sitting since Dec/03 - not sure about condition of head.

Besides the mechanical and the cosmetic damage, it looks good.
