Robbie Montinola Wins Skip Barber Race at Laguna Seca
Hey Guys,
Check out this Skip Barber article on last weekends races at Laguna Seca that just got posted on their website. Robbie won his first Skip Barber Race after just one year of Racing with Skip Barber. Read below for some background info, check out the picture below, then click the link for the article. Lots more details and more pictures of Robbie.
In Friday Practice, Robbie broke the Skip Barber Formula Dodge R/T 2000 track record of 1:39.655 by running a 1:39.072. He was the quickest of all 45+ competitors, including the National Championship points leaders, A.J. Allmendinger and Landon Yee among other notable drivers in attendance such as Al Unser III.
In Saturday Qualifying, John Knudsen reclaimed the track record by running a 1:38.984. Robbie qualified 2nd in that race to John Knudsen, who has 5+ years with Skip Barber and almost won the Championship last year.
During the races on Sunday, A.J. Allmendinger, a Paul Tracy Protégé and 2-time Pro 125 Shifter Kart National Champion as well as the current points leader in the Formula Dodge National Championship, further pushed the track record to a blistering pace of 1:38.639. Sunday's weather was cooler than Saturday and Friday being the warmest.
Robbie did a double race event, so he was racing back-to-back groups with only a 15 minute break to refuel the cars. One 30 minute race plus warm up is very tiring already, so you can imagine what 2 races one after another would be like.
These are sprint races that everyone drives as fast as they can the whole time with identical cars. The races are very aggressive with lots of passing attempts and side by side action. A few cars were totaled last weekend, but that's what the Insurance is for, although it's a $4,000 deductible.

Why are you speaking in 3rd person???
I, the father, go by "RMR" on this board. Sorry, I haven't had time to drop by much.
My son goes by "zentraedityper" on this board. He also hasn't had much time.
If you guys have any questions about racing with Skip Barber, TCRA, or Racing in general, we would love to help. Email me for a quicker response at: robmonty@home.com
Hi Robbie,
I would also like to congratulate your son on his achievement, which is very impressive. I talked to your son some at the Expo, but unfortunately never had a chance to talk with you.
Is there any chance that you and your son could make it to the 2002 Expo on May 18 & 19 at Gingerman Raceway?

I wish you & your son much more successes in the future! Any plans for bigger & better open-wheeled events? When i have him, i'm putting my kid in a shifter kart at 5 years old and calling Mr. & Mrs. Schumacher for parenting tips

Ya, congradulations Robbie thats so rad. I am envious. This kid goes to college full time, is a manager at a nice skate shop in Laguna Hills, and still has time to win the skip barber race, haha I love it. Mad props.
...to add to that, it shows what hard work and dedication add up to

Congratulations on your son for his achievement. From the sound of it he was running up front all weekend, nice to see that he could pull off a win, very, very impressive.
Thank you all for your kind words and sharing this memorable first win with us.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend the 2002 ITR Expo at Gingerman since we have a race at Putnam Park the weekend before the Expo and the weekend after at Lime Rock Park on the Memorial weekend.
Wes, I remember exchanging emails with you on the Type R list. You were on my list of people to meet at the Expo, but I got sidetracked since there were so many old friends from TCRA that I hadn't seen since Laguna Seca in Dec 2000. I'm sure we will have more opportunities in the near future.
Great job in taking charge of the 2002 Expo. I'm sure it will be a success.

You are right about starting your kid out in Karts as soon as possible. The years of Karting experience gives them a big advantage when they get to the stage my son is in. I highly recommend it.
That guy on the right doesn't look to happy about taking 3rd place, Heh.
He was passed late in the race by Al Unser III, who finished 2nd. He probably wasn't too thrilled finishing behind 2 kids much younger than him.

We are honored to represent the Asian-American Community in Road Racing. It still needs more Asians, come join us.
Frank, many seats still available at Skip Barber. You should put all those track days to good use.
