Thinking of ditching my B16 and dropping in a built mini-me.... am I on CRACK?
I dunno, been reading up a lot about this mini me setup, and it's damn cheap. I mean, it is.
Facts:
1- I am going turbo 100% guaranteed..NA is just REALLY too expensive
2- I want to build the motor, at least rods/pistons all new bearings/gaskets etc.
3- I just want ~250whp and decent torque
4- either way want to convert to OBD 1 and use Uberdata for tuning
I can get some rods and pistons for my stock D15 motor, get a D16Z6 head for CHEAP and get a Si tranny for just as cheap or keep the DX.... I mean, I would then have to sell all the **** I got for the B16 but I could recover most of my money.
Just from selling my B16 and related crap I could fully build the Mini-me and turbo it....
Why are there so many damn options?
**EDIT**
NOt to mention that some Mini me's have the same who I got with my B16...and much better torque..

Why not just save more money and boost the b16?? Youre more than halfway there...the b-series is a better platform in the long run (ls/vtec - b20/vtec) w/ more power potential.

I agree, If you want to go turbo just start savin. Run modest boost at first until you can build your motor up. Nice Title btw

i think you should go d instead of b series. b16s are overrated.the torkless wonder
but a turboed built d series can be just as powerful as a b. some guy down here in tx. right now is running on stock d series homemade turbo kit at 12 psi for racing. 254 hp and 234lbs of torque.also 8 psi daily driver.
b series to high to keep up if ya break something. all of this of a d16z6

why not just save your money and buy a type r,
here is the down side of your turbo set up, boosted motors dont last long regaurdless if it's built or not,it's bown to happen ..and dont they dont run good in hot weather. boosted motors require more TLC, for selling your b16 and getting a turbo d16 ok but did you consider gauges ,egine management ,injectors
new exaust, boost controller and dyno time? and in the end most likely
youll get tired of the power it makes and then youll want somthing with more power, so you will pay double in the long run,
i myself have a fully built h22/turbo it's cool and all but nothing beats
that ALL MOTA VTACK!!

both my friends run z6 turbos and they pull some nice times. both of them are running stock z6's and one is tuning with an afc and the other is standalone. on slicks the guy with the afc pulled a 13.7 and the guy with standalone ran a 12.8. so d -series is no joke
Thanks for the comments guys.
I'm just trying to understand why people are saying the D series is half the motor then the B....LOL
I like my B16, no question but still, I have 3 D series motors in the garage..lots of spare parts..I'm thinking just going with that because of the ease of availability.
I just found a 89 Si for sale with REALLY badly rusted body, but it has the SAWEET Si interior in very good condition, and I can use the A6 and Si trans....Use turbo edit on the non-vtec A6 with a boost map..
I went with a B at first because I fell into this whole "B series is a better platform" but I don't doubt for 1 second that a Built boosted D16 will put out the same power and more torque then the B series turbo.

I really don't see any benefits from going from a b16 to a d series. Unless you have a lot of spare parts in case you break something.
B16 is a better platform and will make more power than the D.
B16 is a better platform and will make more power than the D.
but if I am looking for 250whp, I can get it easily with either platform.
It's been done quite a few times that we've seen on the board a D series going over 300whp.
It's not like it's limited to 150whp max....
I guess the 1 downfall would be not beeing able to rev to 8000rpm...but that's fine.
I can get the power I want from both motors..if I am not mistaken the D series will make more torque, is this correct? So why keep the B16?
Better platform for what.....both motors can yield the same power outputs... I don't care that the B might do it at 7psi while the D will do it at 9psi...not even sure if it would be different but still...they can both get the sale power..why is one a better platform then the other as far as just the motor goes?

Virginia_Dude. I dont tihnk hes on crack. especially since d series blocks are cheap for one. For two, they DO have single cams in the 9's(Bisimoto for example). For 3, b16's arent even that strong. If it was a b18 then i would re-consider his crack issue, but for real, b16's arent what they are made out to be. For Jays91hatch, i think you should do mini-me because i am into it myself.. If i were you, i would think about supercharged single cam Vtec instead of a turbo. but just my opinion. Either way, good luck bro and keep us posted

U sure about that??. Dont get me wrong, they have a better platform But. D's have potential.
Call me dumb but im holding on to my b16, for a built z6 turbo setup. I plan to take the "D's" and whoop some dohc a$$. Just because there the under dogs...
And not only that, there a dime a dozen and easy as hell to find parts for.
How many b-series cable tranny's are u going to find in a junk yard??
I dont know that just me tho.

If he was boosting a DOHC ZC, OK.......Why the hell would you want to build a Mini-me and then boost. A mini-me is a gutless wonder next to a DOHC ZC. THen you have to deal with multiple fuel maps due to the V-TEC head. Its a hell of a lot easier to boost a Non Vtec D series. But he already has a B16 , your baseline is a lot higher than a D series. You need a lot less boost to make the target HP. And at 250HP he needs to seriously consider Eagle rods and Forged pistons. And he is past the safe boost level for stock sleeves. A B all he needs to do internally is lower compression Forged pistons. Stock B16 rods are up to the task, something stock D series rods aren't.
I love the DOHC ZC but I think the B16 will need far less work and is far easier to hit 250HP than starting with something that has so much less HP to begin with. Been following this boosted D series thing for last several years. Now I am talking about doing this and making it reliable and last. Not a cheap I don't care if it blows up in a week buildup.

im a b series fan as are most of you obviously.
BUT for his needs or what he says he "wants" the d series and he is right. it is cheaper. but unless you are planning on building the d for high boost you WILL get tired of it and want to go faster. not for a while but eventually it WILL feel normal to have that much power. then you will want more. and without a more built d your not gonna get to much more without blowin it up. d's are great motors, they always have been. but when you feel the need for more power down the road, and you WILL. you will wish you stuck with the b.
but truely the choice is yours. you cant really listen to people that really dont know what the car is for, and dont really know your intentions. we are just giving you our opinions, but your opinoin is really the only one that matters when it comes down to how you spend your money. and what you do to your car.
GOODLUCK with whatever you choose

Thanks dude, I appreciate that.
I dunno, I just came up with this SOHC Idea yesterday... and I was looking at it and I can do a D16A6 non-vtec, build it up and use Turbo Edit for the PM6 Si ECU which has a dual map for Boost..which is all I need. PLus launch control, and romualtor support..I mean, as for tuning, what more can a guy want?
For the motor, I KNOW for a fact I can sleeve the D16 and get new rods/pistons for a fraction of the cost of what it cost me to put my B16 in the car. Even if it ends up costing the same as having the B16 in the car with a good clutch and Stage 2 or 3 axles...I'm that much more ahead with a built motor and mods to support the power.
Then I just turbo the thing and possibilities are endless. Using Turbo Edit to tune, I am not limited to ~11psi like the AFC hack guys are so I can run more boost because I can tune it and the motor can handle it because it will be built....
I dunno, just seems to make sense, especially now since I know that the D can make power.
So I would just leave it non-vtec, build it, and boost the crap out of it.

I think YOUR on crack. A boosted fully built mini me would eat a stock b16 NO DOUBT
Also...look at it this way... The parts for a d series is much cheaper. I dont care if you break a damn screw it will be cheaper to replace it on a d series then it would be on a b16, or any b series for that matter. I went through 2 heads TWO d16y8 heads and only spent 200.00 total. If your smart sell the b16 COMPLETE SWAP, take the money that you get out of the b16 and build a dope *** mini me, then save up and buy a full turbo kit on ebay (i found one with front mount for 899 SHIPPED.) Then take your car and put it up to a b16, you will be happy with the results

I'd say either way you go, you're gonna pay to go fast. We all know the old addage (sp?)...
Wanna be different, save some $$ and don't mind rippin' apart & replacing **** WHEN it goes wrong?? Go for the D. They can certainly make respectable turbo power. No question. As far as reliability pushing 250whp on a(n) (unbuilt) motor that pushes, what, HALF that stock? Couldn't tell you. I don't have one.
Why yes, I DO have a b16
, works for me. But as was mentioned YOUR build-up depends on YOUR intentions. Personal results may vary. LOL!
As far as a FULLY built and BOOSTED mini-me eating a STOCK b16, for the love of God, i should hope so!!! But as we can all see, that is apples and oranges.
That said, if you're going turbo for the 1st time, I'd say go D. Less expensive learning curve, as far as toasting your stock motor and/or trans. However, I can't imagine it being remarkably cheaper to BUILD a d-series. I mean you are still sleeving a block, getting custom rods/pistons, etc. So my guesstimate would be similar $$ to BUILD either one and turbo. But that's $$ that's offset by selling the more expensive b & going d.
I've got respect for any & everyone out there that's into their cars, and into making them better. What BETTER entails is entirely a personal issue. Not knocking anyone in the least, just presenting my point of view.
<<End Babbling>>
Summary: Personal preference...Where do you want to go today? And how do you choose to get there?

P.S. Just as a side note, I do recall an old article with a junkyard turbo build-up on a b16 in a del sol. They spent like $1,000 from bone stock for the whole setup to run 10 psi, very basic setup. 275whp & 200tq.
Go ahead & marinate on that for a minute.

Maybe I should have mentioned before....I'm not new to the Turbo thing.
I've done quite a few turbo setups in the past, just not on Honda's. this is my first Honda.
And also, this is my "shop" car or promo car. So I think having a fast SOHC turns more heads then a fast DOHC so that will help with the publicity etc.
We'll see what happens.
Either way I will post up on here as I go along.
