Default MPFI swap complete!

FIXED!!

After what I believe is over a year of my swap just sitting, I got my 91 Si dizzy in today after waiting over a week of gay bs. Stuck it on, fired it up, and VROOOOM!!

No CELs, but 3k RPM idleing right now. I havent checked out what the culprit might be yet as I was just glad it worked alright. I'll be checking tomorrow though.

I do got a small question though, when I go to have the fuel pump kick on, after it does I hear a pshhhh after it is done, like a relief of pressure, is that normal? I have the hood off so I dont know if its something I can just hear now because of this.

woot woot!

Edit: I also want to thank Hcivic88 and Fourthgenhatch for their guides, so thank you!

Ok. I went out today to see whats going on.

Then after about 20 seconds the car started to smoke out of the back of the exhaust. It is white, light looking/foggy. It is non stop while the car is on. It has a smell to it when you are in the smoke/fog, reminded me of the intake cleaner I used on the intake so I figured I let it run a bit more and see if its just burning off or something.

I let the car get warm, and I go to look out the back and im seeing puddles of what looks like coolant laying there, and its spitting out of the exhaust. I go to the front of the car and look under and I see coolant dripping out of the connection from the down pipe and cat if I remember correctly.

After the car is warm, it idles back and fourth (bouncing) from 1k to 3k I think as well. This is not my main concern right now though as I'm sure I can figure this out, but I thought I throw it in incase it has anything to do with the coolant.

I have doubled checked all my hoses to see if they are on secure and not rotted, everthing looks good. The intake I got had a lot of the hoses left on, so when I bolted it onto the head the hoses all lined up to where they needed to go on my DX. I'm pretty positive I got the vacume hoses correct as well. I bring this up because after searching the other day I think I saw someone metioned a hose that uses coolant on the Si manifold is different then on the DX, like different spot. I couldnt find it today though.

Cliff Notes:
After DPFI to MPFI
Turn car on
Non stop light white/foggy smoke
Thought it might be intake cleaner burning off
Let car warm up, while it warms up I check around
Puddle of coolant out of exhaust and under car before the cat

Does the smoke smell sweet? You might be burning coolant. It also sounds like you have a vacuum leak. did you use a new gasket when you installed the intake manifold to the head? And did you torque the nuts to 16 ft/lb. coolant may be leaking into the combustion chamber. HTH.

Yea some times it smells sweet. I'm pretty sure its coolant though.

I used a new gasket, and I did torque it to specs: 192 in/lbs

I think im narrowing it down to a hose thats different on the Si compared to the DX. As it only started after the MPFI swap.

make sure you got all of the old gasket material off the head and intake manifold. when i did my mpfi swap it did the same thing. 3k idle and foggy smoke. btw when you fix it dont worry if a little smoke is still comin out.

I know I got the mating surfaces clean. They looked brand new when I was done with them. I used something different on the head, my father told me to use this other thing to clean the head so to not scratch it up.

Thanks for the help guys.

Double-check the IM gasket!!! and don't run the car anymore until you find the problem and get the coolant out of the cylinders!!! (It will be in #4) I've seen others on this board completely blow their engines because of the pressure of having a cylinder full of coolant!

When I did my first MPFI swap i thought I had the IM torqued properly but it turned out that the back bracket was bent up a little and holding the mani too high, which left a gap along the bottom. pull the mani back off, bend that bracket down a little, and re-install the mani with a new gasket (double and triple check that the surfaces are clean!!!)

Ya, im not going to run the car anymore thats for sure. I'll double check that out when I got work on it first. So none of you guys think this might be a wrong hose placement? I know I got it correct as if I had an Si block but I'm not sure if theres any differences to the DX.

Alright I went out and checked the mating between the head and mani, they are fine and I dont think its leaking there.

I looked inside the plenum through the throttle body and notice it is soaked of some liquid. Only place I could pin point where coolant might come in perhaps is through the EACV I think. Could this be possible?

Here is a pic of how I got mine set up..

The pinkish hose goes back under on the far right of two other thicker black hoses.

Can I bypass the EACV and under the throttle body with the red hose and just go straight back next to the other hoses underneath near the block where the pink hose ends?

You were so right man. That bracket was throwing my **** off as well.. twice! The third time I went an extra step and used some super high temp liquid gasket around the square coolant gap. The exhaust stopped leaking, the radiator stayed full as well. I changed the exhaust while I was at it to. When I chopped that sucker up, the resonator had enough water to fill about two standard glasses full I bet. I took the car out for a drive, about after an hour it suddenly stopped. Thanks guys!!

Good job. I have a DPFI to MPFI myself.
