the parents just picked up a crv and both the engine and tranny(a/t) are overfilled quite a bit

did you check it with the car running, and im not sure if you need it in park or nuetral? i have never had experience with it but i am sure it could effect the readings.
Honda automatic transmissions are checked with trans in park and engine not running. level should not be any higher that top of hash mark on dipstick.
Hope this helps...

you shouldn't have anything overfilled from the manufacturer the car should be running when you check the trans fluid try that and see if it stays the same

Most cars you leave them running; but for some reason most hondas you get it warmed up & turn it off. But they ALL tell you which way to do it in the book.
