Default IYO B18c1 or rebuild B16a1

I have a B16a1 now and wanted to put a turbo on it. The problem is the engine smokes blue at higher rpm's (5,500 and up) The car doesn't indicate any problems in the oil consumption but the smoke has me a little bit worried. I don't want to sink money into a car the has problems with it. I would want to fix the problem first. My question IYO is if it's something simple like rings, could I get away with just swapping out the factory slugs and rings and be done with it? The reason why I'm having a hard time deciding weather or not to fix it is because the tranny has a real problem with grinds in 3rd gear also. I though about just purchasing a b18c1 complete and start over with a better tranny and bigger displacement. I would just sell the crx with the b16a in it or maybe keep it for a winter beater. Oh ya, I have an other crx that will be getting the new/rebuilt engine in it. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks!!

sell it and go with the B18C1 IMO since you really haven't pinpointed what is really causing the smoking

Yeah sell the rex with the b16 and definetly get a B18c1 motor and build it up. That would be an awesome motor, especially if built from the ground up. Good luck

IMO i would take the 3000 or so you were gonna spend on the B18c1 and put it into the b16. I dont now how many miles you currently have on it, but chances are...if you are gonna do a big rebuild...new internals so forth and so on...then why buy a new motor that is stock when you can take an existing motor and build the hell out of it.

Yes, you take a chance in rebuilding a motor that smokes, but no more of a chance that buying a motor thats stock. There is a good possibility that if you build it right you will fix your problem in the process and be better off then having bought a new motor that you now have to drop even more money into...HTH

IMO go for a LS-VTEC or CR-VTEC if your head off the B16 is good bolt it to a bigger block you can get a tranny off of jdmshit.com for $500.00 it would be cheaper B18C's go for $3,500 you could build a low compression bottom end with forged pistons and rods and boost away

Thanks for the suggestions. Going the LS/VTEC route is something I have considered in the past but decided the best bang for the buck is a turbo. BUT..... now I have the engine smoke issue. The other problem was if I did go LS/VTEC then there was all ways the question of reliability and having enough power to satisfy the need for speed. Do I sleeve it and go natural? If I do forced induction and LS/VTEC the price will probably be too much for what I would want to spend on a car/motor. So....I would have to go N/A. This sucks!! LOL

Your smoke problem may be something as simple as valve seals, maybe check into that. It sucks about 1st gen B16 cable trannies grinding all the time. To avoid problems with an upgrade your tranny to a newer hydrolic tranny or find the rare but reliable YS1 cable GSR tranny.

Thanks for the suggestion. What should I do to check the valve seals. Could valve seals make the car backfire at redline shifts up to 3rd gear? Or is it just my near zero back pressure exhaust that create the backfire???

The smoking could be caused from running rich. I Would hate to spend 3500 on a GSR that might smoke also?? I would Rebuild a b16a Supercharge or Stroke it sound good.

Bro...Just do a regular tune up! I had the exact same problem...Turns out my spark plugs were fugged, their gaps were all different, and couldnt fire worth ****. Dont give up on the ol' b16 just yet.

I wish the plugs were the problem. I just replaced those about a month ago. (thinking just that!!) The other problem is that the idle is a little bit to high I think. It will idle around 2500 at times. (when I start it for the first time that day or after it sat for a little while) Seams like it has a mind of it's own though. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is and I'm starting to loose faith in the motor i guess. I checked compression. All cylinders are around 205. My TPS is working perfect too!! I DON'T KNOW!!!

Unfortunately...... yes.
Is it normal for the b16a1 to kinda spit and sputter when under very lite load? (40mph)??
It feels like the engine drops a cylinder. There is a power loss when it happens. Is this something that is normal after replacing the cat and exhaust with a better flowing replacement?

If this is your compression nubers that is good. Do a leakdown test if it passes both tests it is a good engine and not your problem.

The smoking could be caused from running rich.

This could be your problem if the leakdown test turns out ok have your car tuned on a dyno.
