Default Tire Shaving in San Diego? Orange County? Help?!

HelP!

I've called discount and some performance places already...and even called Buttonwillow Racetrack and they said the tire shop wont shave tires unless the tires are purchased from them. ArrgGH!

Oh yeah, I think I saw in a Porsche Club forum that Clarence Brown alignment in Clairemont does it. They are on the same street as Pacific Honda's service center.

Okay here is the rundown:

Called Dave at Turners. He says call LUTZ TIRE Co.

I call LUTZ. They say that they used to shave tires 4 years ago, and the machine was sold to a tire company that does not use it. They have no suggestions.

I call Black Forest. They recommend calling Clarence Brown Alignment.

I call Clarence brown alignment, and they say they don't do it.

I called Discount tire (3 locations), they were the most clueless.

I call a random tire place, and they said they think there is some guy in Escondido that does it. "Some Guy in Escondido" was kinda hard to look up in the yellow pages, so no success.

Buttonwillow Tire center does not shave tires that are not bought from them.

I check the HT threads that were recommended. AIM Tires- cant find phone#.

I call Nate Jones Tires in Signal Hill (562) 597-3369, and he DOES DO IT. Although, this place is in LONG BEACH! (2 hours from me) He also requires a 2 day turnaround! Normal Charge $30 EACH, rush charge (1 day turnaround) $45 ea.! Balancing: $12.50 ea. Ouch.

He also informed me that it takes about 45 minutes per tire to shave, and he is one of the few left that actually do it.

Thanks for the help so far...I am sure I'm probably not the only one that is wondering...

Still nothing in San Diego... anyone?

I'll try to stop by Performance Tire on my way to work and see if they do it or know of any one in San Diego that does.

Also, try Winston Tires...they MAY have done it back in the day but I doubt they do it now. It's worth a try.

I bet if you showed up with cash in hand someone would do it for you. Besides, how would they know if you bought them there or not? Last time I had the Buttonwillow tire shop mount tires it didn't look like they were keeping a whole lot of records.

Some people who do not shave tires but might be able to help:

Kiwi at Special Projects
Vision Motorsports , Laguna Hills 949
Michelangelo Motorworkes, irvine 949(works on Glen Kawano's car)
Autolink Motorworks - see sig

AIM's phone number is (707) 938-9193. Ron (AIM) is located @ Infineon.

He might know where you can get it done down there. What size tires are you using? Email me @ quanms@mindspring.com

a good source for me is michaelangelos in irvine...
although i have not had tires shaved by him...he has done alot of other race services (corner balance, straighten bent wheels), so..i think he should have a source for shaving tires.

So, I wasn't able to get the tires shaved for this last weekend, but luckily our 5Zigen teamate, Sam Higashi and Tsuyoshi-san let us use their set(s) for the weekend! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Also, for future reference, the Buttonwillow Shop WILL SHAVE TIRES even if you did not buy them there!!! Do NOT ask the main office, or they will just tell you "no".

The guy to speak to from the tire shop is:
Les Phillips by phone at 661.764.5333
About $12 a tire (pre mounted)

AND, I he was also willing to "trade" me my new set of RA-1's for Pre-shaved tires in his shop Which makes me think I can probably 'call in' for the next event, and have shaved tires waiting for me, and just swap when I am there...

Thanks for all the reply's guys...

and STILL looking for a shaving place in SD.

Les is actually the track manager. He's a cool cat even if I did get in a swearing match with him once. Warren is the next guy you scould try to contact there, also very cool, also swore at him. You probably spoke with his secretary. Carrie I think? A little advice, don't talk to her. She can be a little grumpy.

They don't shave 18s? What's up with that?!?!

The guys at Nate Jones are cool, super old school. A little steep though. By the time I got out of there with two 15s mounted, shaved, balanced, and one mystery dent fixed on my wheel I was out around $140. Also making a second trip a couple days later to pick them up during business hours took a lot of time.

You're gonna have to tell me about those stories sometime...maybe this Saturday at Long Beach if you're going, or at the next NASA event.

Heat Cycle- Discount Tire does it, but Tire shaving is completly different.
