What to lay down before glassing spare tire well?
There's a lot of things you can use. I like to use masking tape (the blue painter's tape works well) and then spray a few layers of PVA over it. You can use duct tape, but it will leave a very gooey residue as the heat from the fiberglass will break down the adhesive. Packing tape will work, and so will a combo of tin foil and masking tape.

you can use it to help get the mold out of the car. Just spray it over the tape with a preval spayer
If you use tape, I'd try very hard to get the tape running all in one direction, and use the least tacky stuff you will find. I've NEVER had a mold just pop out. It always takes a little bit of coaxing on a complex part (like a tire well). So, one of two things must happen:
The mold must release from the tape - or - the tape must release from the car.

I don't think a few dollars will break your bank
Working with fiberglass is expensive. The pro to foil is that it does a good job of protecting your car, and releases off of fiberglass fairly easily. The other nice feature is that you don't have to use much tape to hold it down, so there's less adhesive you have on the car.

Doing a spare tire mold I would use foil, there are times where it makes more sense to use other materials but in a spare tire mold I've found it best to use Aluminum Foil.
i would recommend a garbage bag and then sray wd40 on it. i did mine with a garbage bag with duct tape to hold it in place. works fine and easy to take off when it drys. foil will work too, but its a pain in the *** to take off. trust me.!

How is foil difficult to take off?...you just pull!!
I'd rather mess with that then a garbage bag that is difficult to get to lay flat. Then add WD40 to the mix - even worse IMO

Yeah a garbage bag might be easy to remove but it's gonna be hard to do the bends of the well without having a bunch of wrinkles in the glass.
Plus...I'd feel kinda ghetto using a garbage bag and duct tape...lol???

Once you get the base mould built, do you attach flanges to the fiberglass so you can have a solid edge to work with?
Also, how do you fasten the mold down in the wheel well once it is done? Or just let it sit in there?

i wax the well first, then a ;ight coat of spray glue, lay down plastic wrap and all done
works like a charm everytime and takes a couple of minutes , vs taping the whole thing, but all methods above work , its just what works better for you
