1986 CRX questions.
Hello all. first lemme say hello and give you some background on myself. Im a regular over at DSMtalk (sameusername) and i used to Own a 95 GST. well i wrecked it and needed transportation quick so i bought my 86 CRX HF i beleive is he trim. I love this damn car. takes a beating and just smiles and asks for more. My GST was the most problematic car ive ever witnessed and my CRX has driven through almost 2 feet of water and lived, and visited the local track on several occasions and is still kicking like no bodies business. ive tried searching for these but without success. anyway onto the questions.
My crx has the carbed (i think it may be throttle body injected) 1.5l motor. the air cleaner (i havent removed it yet to look) setup is just like that on a carbed car so i asumed it was carbed until further research suggested the TBI. anyway i want to get more air flowing into the motor and try to make some more reliable power. are there any intake systems available and possibly bigger carbs or throttle bodies out there?
secondly what kind of suspension options are there for the 86. it seems all the attention is paid to the 88-91 where us old skooler are left with nothing. does any suspension from any other models of civic bolt to this setup to maybe goto a double wishbone and possibly independant in the rear also?
next is a question of cosmetics. ive been trying to find a place that sells remanufactured or aftermarket fenders. my car has a serious rust problem. im getting new floorpans welded in shortly to rid myself of water splashing me while driving, and my fenders are pretty damn rusty. i saw the Mugen 84 CRX that won the SCCA GT4 class back in 85 with the wide body kit and thats not what im looking to do but some bigger flairs on the wheel wells wouldnt be a bad thing.
next is a question of compatability. does anyone have motormount kits to swap in newer motors? i wanna buy another 86 and put a LS/Vtec setup in it. but again i am unable to find the nessecary parts. this project prolly wont happen for a year or two but i would like to gather all the info i would need and get everything to be setup just like i want it.
also i want to add that i never understood why people would want to drive a CRX or HB honda until i drove my CRX for the first time. these are glorified go carts and goddamn are they fun.
o also ive found a 87 HB Si for 300 dollars that needs a fuel pump but the body is in horrible shape. im thinking about buying it and yanking that motor for a go cart (the style with the 5 horse briggs and straton engines) that sees the drag strip only. id basically just put the entire front suspension, motor, brakes, hell even the stock tires and everything on the backend of the go cart. whatcha think? my friend owns an offroad shop and he is eager to do it so it may be accomplished soon.
thanks in advance for anyhelp you can offer.
o yea here is a small pic of my CRX, my olds and my old GST

welcome. My friend at the track just uses a K&M replacement filter with some tubes feeding it some cold air, like an older mustang setup. For suspension there are some choices, but its best to ask the people at http://www.redpepperracing.com as theyb know everything there is, and can answer all the questions you asked in full detail. we have some good info on motor swaps since they are so popular for the newer CRXs and such, but for straight 1st gen stuff, go to redpepper.
