Default Digital Dash short or ECU problem?

Alright, I have a 94 si with the digital dash. Periodically my digital dash will turn off (sometimes just the clock, sometimes the whole dash) and then will come back on seconds later. I have had the clock go out more often.. but it comes back on in a second or two usually. Now, I have had the whole dash turn off twice, and both times it was out for about 3-5 seconds.

Okay, so today, the clock was turning itself on and off about 3 times in a span of 10 minutes for a couple seconds each time. Normally the clock turns itself off for a couple seconds once a month on average. Then, I noticed my whole dash went out for about 3-5 seconds. When it came back on, my ABS light was on. I slammed on my brakes on the snow to see if the ABS truly wasn't working, and sure enough it wasn't.

So now here I am trying to figure out what the problem is. Do you guys think it's just a short somewhere (if you have an idea where, please tell!) or do you think the ECU needs to be checked to see if it's sending "improper" commands or something?

On a side note, I just installed a short ram intake and reset the ECU the other day. However, I don't see how this would be the problem since the dash has gone out a few times before I even had the intake installed on the car. Any help would be appreciated!

it's definetly not because of the intake...BTW how did you reset your ECU? Did you disconnect the battery or did you remove the clock fuse? I still dont think your dash would turn off becasue you reset your ECU. Check all your wires for your dash, it'll be tedious but it might help you find a short.

I reset the ECU by unplugging the battery. I figure it's a short somewhere, but I have no clue how to go about finding it... or even how much it would cost to have Honda do it. Anymore help would really be appreciated!

Does your radio go out also? My 92' is doing almost the same thing yours is except that it's not my whole dash, just the radio and the cigarrette lighter for my radar detector. I think all I have to do is get underneath the dash and change the adapter for the radio.

Do you lose power whenever you hit a bump or anything or does it do it out of nowhere? Also, did you say it started happening after you reset the ecu? If this is the case check all your connections in your engine bay to make sure there making good connection. You may have accidently knocked something loose.

I had this happen a few times in my car....
Started out that when I would start the car it would flicker (while starter was engauged) and sometimes once the car started the gas and temp gauge would stay off. Usually upon killing it, then restarting they would come back on. Over time however it got worse. Eventually the EL speedo and tach started acting the same. Finally, because it was old I replaced the battery, but sadly by this time the gas/temp guage had completely stopped working. Good news was is the speedo and tach stopped flickering when starting, and I haven't had a problem with them since.

So my best guess, was that by replacing the battery I am supplying more CCA at startup and the power flow isn't being interupted to the guages, thus solving my problem. This may sound silly, but I honestly believe the dying battery was the problem. So if your battery is old I would consider replacing it.

In the meantime I have replaced the gas/temp unit with one off http://www.carpart.com, and got a second off ebay for back up . Both combined, I spent less than 100$ (honda wants 600ish for a new one).

This may not be your problem if it randomly happens when the car is already on, as I said mine happened during startup. Goodluck

I've having to buy an Ignition Switch (electrical part) to fix the car atm. Supposedly this has a relationship to the dash, but maybe not. The alternator might be going, but until I can figure that out I'll have to install the IS.
