YS1 tranny owners...
Well, I'm trying to help a friend figure out the difference between a VTEC and non-VTEC YS1 transmission. I wanted to know if the serial number is a clue. Can we make a list of YS1 serial numbers along with what motor (B18A, B17A, or B16A) it originally came with? Thanks.

only way to find out for sure is by counting gears...

not all cable trannies still have the serial numbers on them. they are stickers most of the time and after ~14 years they might not be there, as was the case with my own GSR YS1. plus i doubt that enough people have these trannies WITH the serials to make a decent list for comparison. not to mention that some YS1 trannies are JDM in origin.
the only way to know for sure is to either buy from someone you trust, crack the bell-housing off the trans and count the number of teeth on the 5th gear, or try the axle trick. if mistabone chimed in he could explain how that works as i forget.
there just isnt an easy way to determine a GSR YS1 from an LS YS1 from a JDM YS1 without opening them up.

There is diff in the cable ys1's... the Non-Vtec one has a taller gear ratio than the vtec one which was 1st gen b16 (integ) cable tranny later to be used with the b17 here in the states...the non vtec ys1 is from 88-91 LS motor and has taller ratio than JDM/USDM tranny

90-93
YS1, A1, S1 all came in the USDM Integra. They're all similarly geared. 92-93 have different internals.

I have a JDM YS1 non-LSD.
I can get the Serial # at lunch when I go out to the car, the sticker is still there.
It's a JDM since when I am in 5th at 110km/h I'm reving at just over 4000rpm.

YS1 - Serial # 1004153
I don't know what car it came from but it has to be from an LS because when I'm going 80mph I'm at 4K. I previously had a JDM S1, and when going 80 I was at 5K.
The dick that sold it to me said it was a 92 GSR tranny.

80mph @ 4000rpm sounds kinda right. an LS tranny would be lower. the s1 tranny has shorter gears then the ys1 gsr, but it shouldn't be 5k rpm at 80mph. maybe 4400rpm.
from my experience 5th actually should be pretty close to 5k rpm at 80mph. the GSR YS1 in my own car turns around 4700 rpm at 80mph and thats with an ITR 5th. the GSR YS1 5th is even shorter.
the 4k rpm at 80mph could be right for an LS as the 92-93 LS 5th is shorter than the 94+ and 90-91 LS, IF i remember right.

I've spoken to YS1 owners that have a true GSR tranny(92-92), and have confirmed that they are right under 5K when going 80mph in 5th.
I have also spoken to YS1 owners that have a non GSR tranny, and have confirmed that they are right under 4k when going 80mph in 5th.
This is how I came to the conclusion that I had a non GSR YS1.

Is their a way to tell if the tranny is from an LS or from a 92-93 gsr? I did not know that there was a difference and I have had a ys1 before. I know I had the 93' GSR YS1 cause I pulled it but, I am in the market again and don't want to get scammed. 93' eg w/LSVTEC w/YS1
gonna pull hard!!!!!

put it in 5th gear, turn the differential 1 full turn and tell me EXACTLY how much does the main shaft turn ... and I"ll tell you if it's GSR YS1 or B18A YS1.
I bought a YS1 that was supposed to be out of an LS but the ratios work out to be a GSR.
In my search to find the ratios I found some interesting numbers.
There may actually be 3 YS1s according to the sites I've seen.
The GSR one (B17A)
and an
Early and Late LS YS1
The early YS1 has a 4.266 ratio
and the late has a 4.40 ratio
This info could be wrong but it is what I've read.
