Default my abused b16 finally gave out

i got my turbo set up all done and went to the dyno, stock bottom end except some je 9:1 pistons. it had piston slap and a leaky head gasket but i thought might at well get it tuned and run her til she blows. so i took it to the dfi tuner and his system is pretty fancy, its his own piggy back system, very similar options to hondata. anyways, it made 300 whp and 220 lb-ft torque at 11 psi and that was a third gear pull only to 7k rpm because it started coming off the dyno so he had to let off. it starts spooling about 2k rpm and the wg spring open at 13 psi but never opend during the dyno run. i knew a rod was gonna go or something was gonna happen soon with that much psi on a stock bottom and sure enough she blew when i was running the **** outta her the other day. the manifold is working great and the 3" dp and exhaust works better than i thought.

the block is at golden eagle gettins some 84mm sleeves. newer eagle rods, cp 9:1 pistons, cometic head gasket, honda bearrings, 3bar map sensor and a new crank are going in now. once i get it broke in i will take it back to the tuner. i havnt had the guy mess with vtec yet but i was wondering where is the best place to set it at? do i keep it at 5500 rpm or should i move it to 4500 rpm? thanks guys. are these numbers kinda usual? im not really sure. i thought they were kinda low but then again it wasnt all completely tuned. any other suggestions? i was gonna go with crower 43-40's but the shop thats building the short block for me said they are running eagle rods on their cars with around 24 psi daily.

I plan on boosting 17-20psi with an SC50 daily on Eagle rods.

It's kind of hard to tell you if the numbers are average since you haven't told us what turbo you're running.

well number 2 rod broke and number 2 piston melted, so detonation and weak rod

That's pretty odd.

You had je pistons in there, with the right tuning they shouldn't have blown.

I say make sure you know the reason why it blew before you take it back on the dyno, because even with a sleeved block you'll still have problems if you're running a lean mixture or too much timing.

well when i took my oil pan off to drill it for the return i saw a little aluminum from those pistons and there was a little oil coming out from under the head right under the distributor cap, it was abused with the old nos dp set up i had on it. and at 13 psi i knew it wouldnt last long as week as it was already

If it means anything to you, mine's putting down 250whp @10psi stock bottom end.
I'm runing the same turbo.
Thiswinter I'm yanking her out and building her with eagle rods, and havent decided on pistons yet, or bore size.

It shoulda had no problems lasting @ 13psi. I ran my car hard as hell for almost 2 months before winter @ 14-15psi and haven't had any problems...I have an all stock bottom end too. I think its something else other than the motor just giving out due to power/abuse

the af ratio was about 12.5:1 across except at low rpms from idle to about 2k rpm it was in the 13's. it coulda been tuning but timing was retarded and there was plenty of fuel

Sounds like you detonated, same thing happened to my motor. Id recommend a different tuner, or else youll blow your next engine as well.

Did you run stock compression or did you lower it with a thicker headgasket? Just curious, because I have similar WHP goals with almost the same compression. What did you use to tune it with?

Well since a stock map sensor is only good for ~10.6PSI, maybe whatever fuel managment (I don't really understand what you were using) wasn't able to appropriatly retard timing for those last 2PSI on boost, or add additional fuel appropriatly? Or maxing out injectors maybe?

the map sensor was a gm 1bar so that could be and it was off a 95 s-10 that was at my dads junkyard so it coulda been not very good. all i know is that the motor wasnt even like 75% and with that much boost i knew it was gonna give out sometime soon but i just didnt think that soon. and i was just wondering what you guys think of the current buildup or any suggestions or anything.

I think if I had a better tuner, I would see numbers closer to 275whp.
This time next year I should be making 350+ whp.

sounds good, good luck man, i was planning on sleeving and building the block up this summer but its coming early now. im hoping for 400whp with no more than about 18 psi. is this doable?

I think you might want to run race gas to get 400whp at that psi level.
From what I've seen though, your numbers at low boost seem very strong so you have the potential.

If running on pump, just make sure the tune is not too agressive, or it won't last that long.

awesome, i think ill just have the guy lower my af ratio to about 12:1 during boost, just to be safe.
